Coming in tied with Johns Hopkins and Northwestern University for the #9 spot on U.S. News & World Report's rankings, Caltech stands alongside the Ivy League schools. The site also places the school at #5 for computer science, #5 for best undergraduate engineering programs, and #2 in undergraduate research programs.
But instead of Harvard topping the list, the latest rankings show the toughest school to get into is a California university: the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Harvard University placed second on the nationwide list of hardest colleges to get into.

David Van Valen studies how living systems process, store, and transfer information, and aims to unravel how these processes are perturbed in disease states, from viral infections to cancer. The task is challenging on several fronts: the sheer number of genes even in the simplest organisms, the fact that living systems evolve over time and space, and the inability to average data across different types of cells. To overcome these challenges, Van Valen uses genomics techniques to study the diverse genes in individual cells, and imaging technologies to record cellular movement and behavior. Ultimately, he believes machine-learning algorithms combined with genomics and imaging will enable unprecedented analysis of biological data. Van Valen joined Caltech as a visiting associate in 2017 and was appointed assistant professor in 2018. He was named to the 2020 class of Rita Allen Foundation Scholars for research that “holds exceptional promise for revealing new pathways to advance human health.” He has bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics from MIT and earned an MD as part of the joint MD/PhD program with Caltech and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
A world-leading expert in observational astrophysics, Andrea Ghez won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for her work using the twin telescopes at the W.M. Keck Observatory to demonstrate the existence of a supermassive black hole lurking at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Her findings provide the best evidence yet that such exotic objects really do exist, opening up opportunities to study the fundamental laws of physics in the extreme environment near a black hole and to learn what role this black hole has played in the formation and evolution of our galaxy. Among numerous other honors, Ghez is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a MacArthur Fellow. She is the fourth woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics (the first was Marie Curie in 1903) and the first woman to receive the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ prestigious Crafoord Prize. A Caltech alumna, Ghez earned a BS in physics from MIT and has served on the faculty at UCLA since 1994.
