It's been about a year since I completed my health coaching course through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and this post is long overdue. I'm often asked by others about my opinion of the course and if I think it's a good program. The answer is....maybe. Personally, I was absolutely wowed by the course.
IIN has been leading the industry for the past 30 years with our Health Coach Training Program™, which can be completed in six or 12 months, in English or Spanish, and has evolved to become the most respected, in-depth, and interactive online training available.
IIN is a money scam This program costs over $5000 for basic health information you could simply google. It offers minimal training in coaching theory and how to actually make a difference for your clients. They claim it should be "intuitive".
Most coaches offer two sessions per month, and the session time ranges from 45 – 60 minutes. New coaches that are just starting out charge around $50 – $75 per session. More experienced coaches charge $100 – $200 per session. There are also coaches that charge by the package ($1,200 – $2,400) so there is quite a range.
Yes, you can absolutely start a business without spending a dime on your training. But know that there are some inherent sacrifices you'll be making in terms of your education, your learning experience, and your potential career readiness.
You have two weeks to take the test after it is released. The tests are open book and super easy; 30 questions multiple choice with a two hour time window to complete once opened. One of my fears of joining IIN is that I would get bored and loose interest in completing, flash backs to college if you know what I mean.
A health coach is a relatively new career, and it's a good fit for people who are passionate about inspiring and motivating others to live their best lives. With increased demand for health coaching, these professionals work in many settings.
Many coaches charge based on an hourly rate. New coaches typically start at $50-$75 per session. Meanwhile, experienced coaches may charge $100-$200 per session. Then there are package deals that may come in at $1200-$2400 per bundle (but more on this later).

The main objective of a wellness coach is to provide counsel and general assistance for the client to effectively come up with strategies that will improve all aspects of their life. A health coach could work to address a specific condition, or target a range of issues.
IIN itself is not accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education [7], which means that its courses cannot be used toward meeting the degree requirements at standard colleges and universities that train nutritionists.
But to call yourself a holistic health coach, you don't actually need any formal education. Someone who's read a few nutrition books can call themself a holistic health coach, see clients, and (for better or for worse), run a business. We really don't recommend you do that. But some people do it.
The ICHWC research found that between 150 000 and 200 000 individuals identify themselves as health or wellness coaches in the United States. Of these, between 16 000 and 20 000 have completed a training program recognized by the ICHWC as a legitimate training program in health coaching.
The Health Coach Training Program is offered in English and in Spanish. The Spanish-supported program is 1-year long, and includes a Spanish-support option if you have questions during your time as a student, as well as select materials that are translated into Spanish.
A Health Coach is a wellness professional whose main goal is to guide clients to reach their health and wellness goals, whether that’s sleeping better, boosting energy, weight loss, stress management, and so much more. Health Coaches create a safe space for their clients to explore their health, facilitating behavior and lifestyle change ...
Graduates who pass the exam earn the title Certified International Health Coach. The IAHC was created to certify competency for Health Coaches around the globe. The mission of the IAHC is to advocate on behalf of Health Coaches and continue to develop the profession in concert with other healthcare professionals.
You can expect to spend about 5-8 hours per week on your coursework or 10-15 hours in the accelerated program; it really depends what you want to get out of the program.
They receive training from a qualified program that teaches necessary coaching skills, as well as foundational nutrition information in order to best serve their clients and their health concerns. Health Coaches do not diagnose, nor do they treat.
However, IIN offers graduates the pathway to certification and further credentialing: 1. IIN's Coaching Intensive Practicum has been approved by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) to allow graduates of this course to apply and sit for their board certification exam.
In 2005 I began my career in spirituality and personal growth. I led talks throughout NYC on topics like manifesting, wellness and meditation. At the time the wellness conversation wasn’t a trend. No one was drinking green juice or eating gluten-free, and meditation was something you might do once in a while in a yoga class.
There are a few common qualities that all of these women had before they signed up for IIN:

I originally wrote this blog post in 2017, and the health coaching industry has come a long way since then. I have also increasingly been getting more questions about The Institute For Integrative Nutrition, in short IIN, and have consequently written follow up blog posts and have created dedicated video content to answer all of your questions.
It's been about a year since I completed my health coaching course through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and this post is long overdue. I'm often asked by others about my opinion of the course and if I think it's a good program.
IIN is a 12 or 6 month long online program designed for people who are passionate about health and wellness. It is broken down into weekly modules (which you can work through in your own time) in which you will learn about nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, mind and body connections, coaching and business skills.
A Health Coach is certified to help clients upgrade their overall wellbeing through diet and lifestyle changes. You will help your clients develop a deeper understanding of the foods and lifestyle choices that work best for them and implement changes that improve their energy and health. You don’t medicate or prescribe. You educate and inspire.
About half of the program is taught by Joshua Rosenthal, the founder and director of IIN. Then there’s many amazing speakers who are at the forefront of the health and wellness field. Some of them include Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Deepak Chopra, David Wolfe, Dr. Mark Hyman, Joy Bauer and many more.
If you’re looking to pursue a career in health coaching, there are ton of different options. Some are full-time clients (online coaching, face-to-face coaching, group coaching), some write books, create healthy products, teach workshops, launch online courses, work at wellness centers alongside nutritionists and doctors…you name it.
When I went through the program, I was working 80% and dedicating the rest of the time towards IIN and my blog. I dedicated a couple of hours on a weeknight, and a couple of hours on a weekend morning each week. On average, you will spend around 5-8 hours per week for the 12 month program or 10-16 hours per week for the 6 month accelerated program.
When coaching, I spent a lot of time in my head, worrying about whether I was saying or doing the right thing. But, when working on websites, social media, newsletters etc, I felt an underlying sense of confidence, that I knew exactly what I was doing, even though I’d never created a website before in my life!
I wouldn't have the health knowledge required to understand what my new clients were trying to achieve in their health businesses. In the end, my transition from a Holistic Health Coach to 'The Healthy VA began by recognising my strengths and talents and accepting my introvert tendencies (that I do my best work behind a screen).
The knowledge I learnt from IIN is immeasurable and I highly recommend the course. I also feel it's important for graduates to be aware that the Health Coach model isn't suited for everyone, and that's ok, because you can still use your IIN skills and knowledge in your own way - like I've done.
