Iowa Western Community College offers training for those interested in becoming Nurse Assistants. The 79 Hour Course is offered monthly in a variety of locations and taught by Registered Nurses. These courses are designed to provide knowledge and basic nursing skills needed to care for patients and residents in a variety of long term care facilities. Nurse Aide students will be awarded 3 Iowa Western credits upon completion. This course is a prerequisite to the IWCC Nursing program. The 79 Hour Nurse Assistant course consists of 34 hours of classroom, which includes professional soft skills, 15 hours of lab, and 30 hours of clinical. Each student will be provided with a course syllabus and the skills checklist, these are valuable tools for the nurse assistant course and state testing.
A continuation of the traditional 75 hour CNA course, designed to provide additional skills and clinical hours to ready students for the hospital work environment. This program is taught by a Registered Nurse.
Certificate of Completion. Each student will receive a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the course. Certificates will not be awarded if the student did not meet the attendance policy as listed above or there is an outstanding bill for Iowa Western Community College against the student’s account.

Students must be present for at least 41 hours of the classroom/lab and all 30 hours of the clinical to successfully complete the course and be awarded a certificate. If a student is absent from any part of the clinical, Iowa Western will not issue a certificate and the student will need to repeat the entire class.
Certification as a Nurse’s Aid: Upon completion of the course, you may take the state nurse’s assistant certification exam. The testing encompasses knowledge and skills assessments. First Steps to RN / LPN: Work experience as a CNA gives you experience many nursing schools value.

If your CNA certificate has been expired less than two years AND you have met the renewal requirements (obtained 48 hours of in-service/continuing education training hours AND worked at least one day for pay providing nursing services), you may renew your certificate by sending a renewal application to ATCS.
Currently the program is an 8.5-unit course: CNA-20 (5.5 units of lecture) and CNA-20L (3 units of lab). Four classes are offered throughout the year: January, March, June and August. The first three classes meet a minimum of three eight-hour days per week for nine weeks. In August, the class will meet a minimum of two days per week for the full fall semester. CNA “reactivations” are for applicants who cannot meet BOTH renewal requirements (worked for pay providing nursing services and accumulated 48 hours of in-service/continuing education training) and must re-take the competency evaluation OR for CNA and HHA applicants, certificates have expired for more than 2 years.
The exam is administered on campus and the current fee is $100.00 (subject to change).
