The Augusta National membership costs are relatively low for a club of its stature. The initiation fee is estimated to be in the range of $40,000. And the yearly dues are estimated at “a few thousand” dollars per year. There are other costs involved, whether for guest fees or on-site lodging, but those are also relatively low.
There’s no application process. If you ask, your chances of every being considered reportedly plummet. And if you do get through initial screening stages, you’ll be exhaustively vetted before it’s determined you are member material.
Depends on your definition of fame, I suppose. Included in the membership are Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and billionaire Warren Buffett. There are CEOs abound, too, from companies like IBM, Bank of America, MillerCoors, American Express, General Electric and plenty more.
It was not until 2012 that Augusta National announced for the first time that it would be admitting women to its membership. Now, four women are reportedly members. Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore became the first two women admitted. In 2014, a third female member, IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, joined the group.
Augusta National members are each issued one green jacket, for which they are charged a small fee. They aren’t allowed to remove these jackets from the grounds. Instead, a member will arrive on property to find his or her jacket freshly prepared in the locker room.
A PGA Tour player who’s exempt from qualifying doesn’t have to pay entry fees for tour events. He does pay a $100 initiation fee, then $100 in annual dues. The only expense he must pay to play in a tournament is a mandatory $50 locker room fee.
The LPGA Futures Tour -- a developmental circuit for the LPGA Tour -- charges all golfers a $500 entry fee for each tournament. To play in a qualifying tournament, Futures Tour members pay $200, amateurs invited by the tournament sponsor pay $230, and non-LPGA players pay $500.
The largest of the mini-tours in the United States, the NGA Tour Pro Series, includes four separate tours. The NGA Carolina Summer Series charges a membership fee of $750. For individual tournaments, members pay $600 while nonmembers pay $800.
The Masters is played each year at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. It’s the only one of the four men’s major championships that is played every year on the same course.
The youngest player to ever play in the Masters is China’s Tianlang Guan, who competed in the event in 2013 at age 14, having qualified by winning the 2012 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. He’s also the youngest player to ever make the cut in a major championship.
Jack Nicklaus has won the Masters a record six times (1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986). Tiger Woods has won it five times (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2019).
