A. The traditional Texas hunter education classroom course lasts about 14 hours and is usually given over the span of a weekend or several weeknights.
The Online + Field Course has two parts: 1) FREE ONLINE COURSE (TPWD or NRA) completed beforehand, and 2) Field Course - 4 hours minimum. There is also an Online-only Course that is restricted to persons that are 17 years of age or older.
Texas Hunter Education Requirements Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be on your person while hunting. Minimum age of certification is 9 years and cost is $15.
The Texas Hunter Ed Course is valid for only 90 days from the time of registration and payment. If you are not able to complete this course within 90 days, the course will be automatically renewed for another 30 days. Your credit card will be charged 10 for each renewal.

These include armadillos, bobcats, coyotes, flying squirrels, frogs, ground squirrels, mountain lions, porcupines, prairie dogs, rabbits and turtles. On private property, these species can be hunted at any time with a valid hunting license. Public hunting lands might have varying restrictions.
A hunting license is still required on public land and allowing others to hunt on your private property for financial consideration requires a hunting lease license.
Now things just got even easier – in order to hunt wild pigs on private lands in Texas you officially no longer need to purchase a hunting license. Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 317 into law on May 31, 2019, permitting any landowner, landowner's agent or lessee to take wild pigs without a hunting license.
Youth under 17 years old are required to be under the immediate supervision of a permitted adult, at lease18 years old, who is licensed to hunt in Texas. Youth under 12 years old must remain within normal voice distance of an adult supervisor (direct supervision).

Most recreational hunting and fishing type license packages are valid from date of purchase in August (August 15 and later) through August 31 of the following year. Most commercial type licenses may be purchased starting August 15 of each year for the following year but are not effective until September 1.
Under 9 years of age: You must be accompanied. Accompanied means: By a person (resident or non-resident) who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control.
The Texas Hunter Ed Course Adult fee is $34.95. Hunters over 17 will also pay a $5.25 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department fee.
