The processing time for Ohio Concealed Handgun Licenses is within 45 days from the date they receive your application.
Ohio passes bill eliminating required training, permits for carrying concealed weapons. Currently, the law requires Ohioans to go through eight hours of training and a background check to obtain a CCW permit.
If you have not qualified within 5 years from your date of retirement, you will need to take a CCW Course. CCW Training certificates are valid for three years from date of issuance.

The range exercise Certificate will be issued by the officiating range/instructor you select and both are valid for a period of 3-years from the issue date to apply for your Ohio Concealed Handgun License.
The complete course training must be completed within a 90-day period of your sign up date to avoid forfeiture of any course fee, unless an extension has been requested and approved in writing. Reserving a range class seat and failing to appear at the appointed time may result in additional fees to complete the course.

The Ohio CCW license is a plastic license, like a driver’s license. This license allows the holder to carry a loaded concealed handgun in public. The county Sheriff’s office is who issues a CCW license. The state has set the training requirement. It also specifies what can prevent someone from getting the license. If a CCW license applicant meets the requirements, then the sheriff must issue the concealed carry license.
The Ohio concealed carry (CCW, CHL) license isn’t just for those in the military or police. Approximately 1 out of every 20 Ohioans have the Ohio CCW license. That is around 600,000 CCW license holders in Ohio.
The key with the Ohio concealed carry license is that you carry a concealed handgun. The plastic license itself provides zero protection. Take the recent mass shooting in El Paso Texas Walmart. How many shoppers in the store had a CCW license but didn’t carry? Alden Hall is a concealed carry license holder that was inside Walmart that day but wasn’t carrying his gun.
The state has set the minimum requirements for the license. You must be at least 21 years old and not have any disqualifiers on your background. I would suggest contacting your Sheriff’s CCW office if you answer “yes” to any questions on pages 1-4 of the application. The Sheriff won’t do a background check over the phone. If you are no longer employed in Ohio then your CCW license is valid until the expiry date.
Ohio allows anyone 21 or older to apply for a concealed carry permit. You must complete 8 hours of training and demonstrate your ability with a gun first. The military are exempt from this rule. Ohio does issue permits for non-residents if they work in the state.
You must not, within three years of your application, have been convicted, pleaded guilty, or been adjudicated as delinquent in connection with a misdemeanor offense of violence. You may not obtain a license if you have been charged with falsification of a concealed handgun license.
To apply for a concealed carry permit in Ohio, you must be twenty-one years old or older. You must complete an 8-hour, approved training course. Non-residents must work in Ohio to get one. You cannot have any felonies or any drug charges against you. You cannot have another permit revoked for any reason. You cannot have committed any violent acts or be charged with domestic abuse. If you assault a peace officer, you will not be issued a gun permit. You cannot have any restraining orders out on you, and you cannot have more than two assault charges within a five year period, or you will not qualify. You also cannot be guilty of resisting arrest.
You must be at least 21 years of age, be a legal resident of the United States, be an Ohio resident for at least 45 days and a resident of Allen, Auglaize, Hancock, Hardin, Putnam or Van Wert County for 30 days prior to filing your renewal application. Most people refer to it a CCW license. If you want to get technical, the Ohio concealed carry license covers handguns only. If you look at the top of the application you submit it will say “State of Ohio. Application for License to Carry a Concealed Handgun”. That’s why you’ll also see it referred to as CHL – Concealed Handgun License.

Licenses expire five years after the date of issuance or renewal. If you wish to renew your license, you may do so 90 days BEFORE the license expires. You should renew your license as early as possible.#N#Applicants residing in another state must renew with the sheriff that issued their previous license. If you no longer live or are employed in Ohio, you may not renew your license after it expires.#N#In order to renew your license, you must submit proof of competency certification. If it has been over 6 years since your original certificate of training, you must take another class to get a new certificate.
Proof of certification may take either of the following forms: A previously issued Ohio concealed carry license. The license may be either expired or currently valid. A competency certificate from your instructor.
