20 x 30 inches24 megapixels is the sweet spot for value and can produce a beautiful fine art print at 20 x 30 inches or a huge canvas print 60 inches wide. For use online, a file over 3 megapixels is rarely required.
It's perfectly possible to enlarge old photographs yourself, but it may be tough to get the best results. If you want to enlarge your photos for printing and preserve the memory for future generations, Image Restoration Center is your best choice!
Open your image in Photoshop. Go to the Image Size dialog, check resample, and select "Preserve Details" in the corresponding dropdown menu. Make sure the Resolution is set to 300 Pixels/Inch. Set Width and Height to inches and adjust to enlarge your image.

Just size your file to 24x36 inches at 300 pixels per inch as a TIF and your print look fine.
24 megapixel is more than enough even to produce prints in the most common sizes and you will keep your file size low. You won´t need to upgrade to a professional editing computer to handle the files in postproduction.
Since 24MP is plenty to make beautiful prints, and this file size doesn't fill up your flash cards really quick, this might be a great choice for many photographers. But if you want the most fine details in really large gallery prints, then 45MP makes more sense.
But it typically will also allow changing that dpi, called scaling (to fit the paper size). For example, if an image dimension is 3000 pixels, then specifying that file number as 300 dpi printing resolution will print it to be 3000/300 = 10 inches print size (even if the paper is 4x6).
If you scanned a photograph and need to enlarge it for printing or analysis, you can use an image editing program. An image editing program increases the image's size by mathematically enlarging the pixels that make up your photo while maintaining the same perspective.
However, you can easily create a canvas using any picture you have – no matter how old it is! This means you can easily create beautiful canvas prints using very old photos that would have otherwise been stuck in a family album or away in a box in the attic.
