Variable Waitlist Unit Limit

Unit of Credit

Credit Hour

On July 1, 2020, the United States Department of Education changed its definition of the student credit hour. Fundamentally, the change now shifts responsibility for credit hour compliance to the accreditation agency and/or to the state.

Course Numbering System

Lower division courses are numbered 1-99 and should be designed for freshmen and sophomores. Many lower division courses have articulation agreements secured with California community colleges. Course Repeats with Grade Points Averaged

Duplicate Credit - Inadmissible Repeats

Unless a course is designated “Repeatable for Credit” in the catalog, repeating a course in which a “C or better” was earned on the first attempt is not admissible. This restriction applies whether the first attempt was at another institution and the second attempt at SJSU, or the reverse.

Excess Units

Enrollment limits for undergraduate students will be set on a semester by semester basis. Petitions and information are available at the Registrar’s Office.

Maximum Unit Loads

An undergraduate student who enrolls in 12 or more units is classified as full-time for the purposes of financial aid. An average unit load of at least 30 units per academic year (15 units per semester without summer or winter coursework) is required to complete an undergraduate degree in four years.

What is continuous enrollment?

Continuous enrollment is required of all graduate students between completion of regular courses and satisfactory completion of the culminating experience. Graduate students who receive an RP (report in progress) grade in a thesis (299), project (often 298), dissertation (599), doctoral project (often 598), or other culminating experience course, as well as those who have completed course requirements but not the program comprehensive examination, may maintain enrollment by registering for other courses or by registering for one unit of University Studies (UNVS) 1290R or departmental 1290R (Thesis/Project Supervision) through Special Sessions for each Fall and Spring semester until completion. Effective with the Fall 2018 semester, graduate students preparing for comprehensive exams or completing a courses-only program culminating experience are included in this policy.

What is the fall 2020 semester?

Graduate students enrolling in the Fall 2020 semester or later must follow University Policy S19-3 which requires that all graduate students demonstrate competency in written English for advancement to candidacy within a master’s program.

How to maintain legal status in the US?

To maintain their legal status in the U.S., international students must be matriculated within a degree program. After disqualification from SJSU, international students must transfer to another institution to maintain their legal status. Enrollment in Open University alone does not qualify them for the immigration document needed to remain in the U.S. Disqualified international students who have transferred out to another university may enroll in Open University for a program of study in order to be academically reinstated but must seek immigration reinstatement from SJSU. Disqualified international students must speak with an international student advisor in the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Office as soon as possible.

Open University, often known elsewhere as extended, is set up primarily as an option for community members to take college courses. It is attended by non-matriculated, post-baccalaureate students seeking to gain future admission to a SJSU graduate program or who wish to take classes to prepare for a professional degree program, such as medicine. It can also be part of the program-of-study mechanism by which scholastically disqualified SJSU graduate students can gain university reinstatement (see section on Program of Study ). Although both are administered by the College of Professional and Global Education , special session programs and open university course offerings are different means for registering into graduate courses.

What is Summer Session?

Summer Session is a self-support inter-session offered between the Spring and Fall semesters, including degree credit courses and some short courses. Enrollment is not limited to full-time and part-time SJSU students. Any adult member of the community is eligible to enroll.

Who may attend?

Classes are open to college and university students, high school graduates and other adults from the community. You do not have to be accepted to San Jose State University to attend this session.

What happens if the professor doesn't post the grade by June 3rd and June 9th?

The title is mostly about it. Filled out the SOTES survey way back earlier. I wonder what happens if a professor hasn't submitted the grade by the final deadline and the grades posted on an official transcript. Is there an effect on a missing course grade after the deadlines?

Classification of Students

San José State University students are classified in the lower or upper division or in graduate standing based on the units completed. The basis of classification is as follows:

Double Major

If a student has completed the requirements for two or more majors leading to the same baccalaureate degree (e.g., two B.A. degrees or two B.S. degrees) for the same graduation application period, those majors shall be acknowledged on a single diploma and on the student’s transcripts.
