Can I retake courses? Yes, you can retake graded courses in which you receive a grade of C- or below or a NP. You may retake up to 16 units, and typically only retake a certain course once. (1) A student may petition for approval to repeat a course when a student was awarded a substandard grade a “D”, “F”, “FW”, “NP” or “NC”) or received a 'W”. Per Title 5 regulations, the student can only repeat the course twice (thus can only take the course three times).
Undergraduate students may attempt to improve their GPA by repeating a course. Only grades of C-, D+, D, D- F, WU or IC may be repeated and forgiven (excluded from GPA calculation). The course can be repeated no more than two times for a maximum of three attempts.

If you want to take a class for the fourth time, you must write an appeal. You would have to discuss with your academic advisor how you can get this done. Once you send the request, whether it would get approved or not depends on how persuasive you were.

Students can change the grading basis of a course on their MyUCLA page until Friday of the Sixth Week of instruction. After that point a student who wishes to change the grading basis of a course from a letter grade to Pass/No Pass, or vice versa, must submit a Late Change of Credit Detail petition.

Repeated attempts will be averaged in the student's GPA up to 18 units. If a course is taken with credit/no credit grading, the original grade will not be excluded from the GPA. A student can no longer repeat a course in which a C or higher grade is earned.
Important: While a D- may be considered passing, your MAJOR GPA, CPSLO GPA and Higher Ed GPA must be at least 2.0 (a C Average) in order to graduate.
