In utilising cognitive restructuring techniques to treat mental distress, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) highlight the causal relationship between perception and experience.

Background and Literature Review

First published in 1976, ACIM is currently translated into 22 languages, with over 3 million copies in circulation (Foundation for Inner Peace 2016 ). The format of ACIM consists of three books, shown in Table 1.

Method

Three qualitative approaches were considered to evaluate if ACIM engagement had any effect, and if so, what those effects might be on mental health. These were asynchronous interviews, focus groups and one-on-one interviews.

Results

The analysis of the information from the 33 interviews produced three distinct, yet strongly correlated themes relating to the benefits ACIM engagement has on mental well-being. These were Attitudinal Change, Emotional Change, and Social Change. These three themes are presented in detail as follows:

Discussion

Although those interviewed in this study differed in age, socio-economic background, locations and beliefs, many reported quite similar experiences as a result of engagement with ACIM. Following thematic analysis, three key areas of positive change were established and reported.
