Turtleback is so named because of their challenging/undulating greens (in a turtle's back fashion), and also for the great deal of mounds that offer tricky lies outside of the fairways on just about every hole. The greens are amongst the finest I've ever rolled a Titleist on. It makes for a very scenic, quiet and serene place to play in the rolling, deeply-wooded terrain of Northwestern Wisconsin.
Turtleback has always been hailed as "The Best Course in Northern Wisconsin"...and it's so very fitting. Nothing else comes close.
Course in excellent shape. Back nine challenging Very picturesque
As a former club pro and golf course manager, I can write an unbiased review.
That said, it's a gem of a property, and without question the highlight of Rice Lake, Wisconsin!
We have played many courses in the States and in several European countries and the Turtleback ranks right up there with the best of them. The course is exceptionally well managed by a very friendly, caring staff - starting at the top with Kevin Carter, the General Manager. This is the first time we've played this course and the very first time we have ever been greeted by a course GM during our round who respectfully took the time to ensure players were enjoying themselves – that sort of management style, not only sets a great example for the staff, but also leaves quite a lasting impression. The course offers the perfect degree of challenge for all talent levels, a very peaceful atmosphere, and well cared for fairways and greens. Kevin periodically offers a great “Stay & Play” package for green fees, carts and overnights at the Microtel, a very nice hotel only five minutes from the course. The Turtleback Golf Course and Kevin’s “Stay & Play” packages have our highest recommendations.
Situated just west of Rice Lake, Turtleback Golf, Dining, & Conference Center is just a short drive from the vacation destinations of Chetek, Cumberland, and Birchwood. Turtleback dates back to 1927 when it was originally opened as a nine-hole golf course. The back nine was added in the 1980s.
I love this golf course. Whenever we go to the cabin, we play at least 1 round at Turtleback. The same course here in the Twin Cities would be double the price, and not nearly as well maintained. The course offers a variety of skill levels a fun opportunity to get out and play.
