Torrey Pines State Beach and the adjoining Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve spread over 2000 acres and extend 4½ miles along the coast just south of Del Mar. The beach begins at Del Mar and continues south past Los Penasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve to Torrey Pines Mesa.
The North Course is shorter and less expensive than its brother. For many, it is more scenic than the South, having more picture-perfect opportunities along the track. The North Course is more popular for the less-experienced golfer but will still put up a good fight for the better ones.
Torrey Pines trails are perfect if you're looking to tackle some easy hikes in San Diego. Not many of these hikes will make you break a sweat, but they are full of amazing viewpoints, plenty of sunshine, and the rarest pine tree (aka the Torrey pine tree) in the United States.

Everyone says you have to play the South Course when you visit Torrey Pines. We found the North Course to be more playable, with better views, more thrilling holes and a better value. Don't be fooled by the hype - go North!
The Torrey Pines South Course is the more challenging of the two and is the host of the 2008 & 2021 U.S. Open Championships. The South course was originally designed by William Bell, Sr. in 1957, and is home to the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Tournament (along with the North Course).
Golf Is Easy at Torrey Pines North Course Having said that, however, with all the beauty of the facility, the North was the third-easiest course on the PGA Tour. Players averaged 69.551 on the North, 2.449 strokes below par. It's not a matter of length; the North measures 7,067 yards and plays to a par 72.
Try this 2.30 mile, loop trail near Del Mar, California. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 10 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.

An entrance fee ($10.00 per vehicle) is collected at the gate which is open from 8:00 a.m. until sunset daily. The lower, beach level lot is directly beyond the gate, with additional parking around the park headquarters and trailheads at the top end of the road.

Tee times can be made up to 90 days in advance, and if you're hoping to play on the weekend, we'd recommend calling ahead as much as you can. (That said, it's not as tough of a tee time to get as Bethpage Black or St. Andrews .) Don't expect dynamic pricing or last-minute deals like most other courses around San Diego.
Because of the Torrey Pines bluffs, which lie between the golf course and the beach, Black’s is difficult to access. After the buildings had been razed, the streets of Camp Callan remained, and with the use of some rubber cones and hay bales, it became the Torrey Pines Race Course in 1951, a twisting, turning 2.7 mile circuit on which both sports cars and grand-prix racers competed. There is nothing left of the race course today, but old-timers recall the start-finish line somewhere in the vicinity of the eighth green of the South course. Drivers headed north, turned left (across what is today the sixth fairway) on a loop that headed toward the ocean, then away from it (east on the first fairway of the North Course). Turning north again, the race track soon made two right turns to head south on a long "straightaway" (which had a couple of jogs in it) parallel to the Pacific Coast Highway (now Torrey Pines Boulevard). Today, that straightaway is occupied by a small practice range, parking lots, the Torrey Pines Lodge, a Hilton hotel and many office buildings. The final loop crossed somewhere along the ninth and 15th holes.
Near the Torrey Pines golf shop, a series of plaques honors those responsible for present-day Torrey Pines. One gives credit to William P. Bell Son as original architects. That's wrong. The son, William F. Bell, designed the two courses.
In 1940, fearful of a Japanese invasion, the federal government leased 710 acres of the Torrey Pines mesa from the city of San Diego for $1 per year, as well as 500 adjacent acres from private landowners, to create an artillery training camp.
It is named for a rare pine tree. The namesake Torrey Pine is a remnant of a prehistoric mountain range now submerged in the Pacific. Here's how the confusion occurred. In November 1950 the city of San Diego signed a contract with William P. Bell and Son, "a co-partnership," to submit a plan for an 18-hole golf course "suitable for construction on city-owned land in Torrey Pines mesa.".
Apparently, before Bell started Torrey Pines, the city had the pavement bulldozed and buried, atop which he unwittingly built some tees and greens. Bell himself discovered this, but not until years later. Subsequent architects who have chopped into those greens have never hit concrete.
