Yes, (W) notations count as an attempt toward UMBC’s Course Repeat Policy and may adversely impact a student’s ability to retake the course or remain in a major/minor/certificate program. Will I get a refund if I withdraw from an individual course (s) or the entire semester?
Courses used within the university requirements may be used towards general education requirements and/or academic department requirements for a student’s chosen major (s), minor (s), or certificate (s) if applicable. Students must complete various general education requirements in order to successfully complete their degree.

If you are putting forth an intense effort, your work is “intense”: “My intense study of Plato convinced me that I would make a good leader.” But when the intensity stems not so much from your effort as it does from outside forces, the usual word is “intensive”: “the village endured intensive bombing.” BUY THE BOOK!

Lecture. There are generally two types of lectures offered at UMBC. The first type of lecture is typically offered in a larger classroom setting. The predominate mode of instruction in large lecture courses is usually lecture-oriented. A second type of lecture is generally offered in a smaller classroom setting and is more interactive in nature.
Clinical based instruction generally occurs outside the institutional setting or in an actual clinical laboratory setting and may involve work with outside partners who receive professional services from students supervised by faculty members. As an example, field placements through the Social Work or Education programs may use clinical as the course component.
Research courses (undergraduate and graduate) are a component type in which a specific interest or academic discipline will be the focus without the requirement of an actual dissertation or thesis. The faculty member and student (s) mutually negotiate the nature of the research. Students receive course credit for engaging in intensive, focused research on a concentrated topic related to their academic studies under the guidance of an instructor, typically culminating in an intellectual product. Minimum credit hours are determined based on faculty instructional time and student outside work time.
Laboratory courses generally meet in a defined physical setting for the purpose of applying the methods and principles of a discipline. Laboratory courses may be offered as a stand-alone course or as a supplement to another course component such as a lecture. Instruction in laboratory courses may include group instruction, individualized instruction and/or hands-on exploratory activities in real-world or simulated settings.

Undergraduate students may submit a request to withdraw from a course by submitting a request to Registration. When submitting a request to the Registrar’s Office, students must include the course number (i.e. PSYC 100) and the term in which they enrolled in the course and received an (I) grade (i.e. Fall 2019).
Why might I request an Incomplete (I) grade?#N#An (I) grade might be a good option to consider if a student currently has a passing grade and there is only a small portion of work remaining to complete the course but , for reasons beyond student’s control, they cannot complete the remaining requirements by the end of the semester.
Students approved for an incomplete grade will be given until the end of the Fall 2020 semester to resolve any remaining coursework. Once a final course grade is submitted, students will have until January 11th 2021 to change the grading method to the Pass (P) option or withdraw from the course.
While there is no limit on (W) not ations, students should only consider a withdrawal in exceptional circumstances to avoid delays in degree completion. Students should consider such interruptions carefully, as they may have academic and/or financial implications.
The spring 2020 attempt in which a (P) grade was earned will count in the total earned credits . If a student has an (A) or a (B) on file, the Spring 2020 attempt in which a (P) grade is earned is excluded from the total earned credits and the (A) or (B) remains in the GPA and total earned credits.
