A student in Yale College normally takes four or five term courses, or their equivalent, for each of eight terms. Minimum course load A student may not enroll in a program of study worth fewer than three course credits in one term.
Permission for a program of six course credits will normally not be given to a student who is not in academic good standing. Seven course credits in a term A student must petition the Yale College Committee on Honors and Academic Standing for permission to take a program worth seven credits in a term.
Yale does not have any specific entrance requirements (for example, there is no foreign language requirement for admission to Yale). But we do look for students who have taken a balanced set of the rigorous classes available to them.
During the terms that students are enrolled and in residence at Yale Law School, they cannot be simultaneously enrolled, either full-time or part-time, in any other school or college either within Yale University or at any other institution.
Yale students enroll in four or five courses each semester to complete a total of thirty-six courses while earning a degree. With roughly 2,000 courses offered every year, it would take more than 200 years to experience the full breadth of the undergraduate curriculum!
In a given term a student may elect as many as (but no more than) two course credits on the Credit/D/Fail basis; and must elect at least two courses, representing at least two course credits, for letter grades or the mark of Pass, in any combination.

Non-degree students may enroll in from one to five courses in any academic term. Non-degree students may not take more than a total of eighteen course credits in the Non-degree Students program.
Students constantly ask, “What GPA do you need to get into Yale?” Well, the Yale average GPA is 4.19. If you're still a freshman, sophomore, or junior in high school, consider enrolling in some advanced courses to boost your GPA. Yale applicants may take up to 12 AP classes to strengthen their average GPA.
The Credit/D/Fail option Any course in Yale College may be taken Credit/D/Fail rather than for a letter grade. If you take a course Credit/D/Fail, a grade of C– or above will be converted on your transcript to “CR.” Grades of D+, D, D–, or F will appear on the transcript as reported by the instructor.
Although it's rare, it is possible to pursue two majors during undergraduate studies at Yale. Double majoring at Yale comes with a particularly heavy course load, because the two majors must be completed independently of each other, with only two courses counting towards both majors.
As an institutional rule, Yale forbids students from majoring in more than two disciplines.
