For two decades, the Shinnecock Indian Nation has tried and failed to open a casino near Manhattan in the hope that a gambling hall would be an economic engine to wrest them from poverty and fund social programs. Now the tribe has its eye on a new location: its home in the Hamptons.
Alan Woinski, a gambling industry analyst and consultant, said the Shinnecocks’ proposal could cause enough of an uproar to pressure Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to offer the tribe a deal to build a more lucrative casino elsewhere. Mr. Polite said the tribe would certainly not rebuff an offer to find a more lucrative location.
Randy King, the tribal vice chairman of the Shinnecock Indians , stood at the site where the tribe plans to start construction of a casino on its reservation in the Hamptons this summer.
The first white settlers arrived in the Town of Southampton, the oldest English settlement in New York, in 1640. In the centuries since then, the tribe has had repeated disputes with the town and has seen its land steadily shrink to its current 900-acre reservation.
In collaboration with the State of Connecticut, Yale University and the Connecticut State Golf Association (CSGA) guidelines, Yale will follow the outlined policies. All golfers are expected to follow these policies; any violation may jeopardize the play of other members and the ability for the Yale Golf Course to remain open.
Everyone must maintain social distance of at least six feet at all times over the entire property including parking lots and playing areas. Respect of social distancing applies not only to fellow golfers but also to golf course employees. Anyone not following social distancing policies will be asked to leave.
That started to change in 1990, when Lowell Schulman founded Atlantic Golf Club, with memberships for the then-astronomical price of $100,000. Atlantic’s fees have since doubled, and there is a long waiting list. Soon, others joined in. In 2003, Robert Rubin founded The Bridge, which costs $550,000 to join.
The target off the tee is a flagpole at the adjacent National Golf Links of America, opened in 1911. The symbolism is not coincidental. Sebonack and other new enclaves on eastern Long Island, like Friar’s Head and The Bridge, are taking dead aim at establishments like National, Shinnecock Hills and Maidstone. ...
