Everyone runs the same course, and although the first 7 runners to finish are considered the scoring team, at every meet ALL athletes get to participate. There are no cuts, and no bench to sit on and watch while others play!
Cross-country is a team running sport that takes place in the fall on a measured 5000 meter (3.1 miles) High School course or 2 mile course for the Jr. High over varied surfaces and terrain.
The standard lengths of international races are 10, 15, 30, and 50 km for men and 5, 10, 15, and 30 km for women. Many traditional contests are longer—the Vasaloppet in Sweden is 90 km (56 mi). Race organizers may stipulate which of the skiing techniques are permitted in an event.
Cross country is similar to golf in that the lowest score wins. A perfect score is 15 points, with the top five runners occupying the first five finishing positions. While only the top 5 runners “score” for their team, the sixth and seventh placed runners also receive a score.
In general, it's recommended to eat before running. This gives your body the fuel it needs to exercise safely and efficiently. If you prefer to run on an empty stomach, stick to light to moderate running. Take a break if you start to feel lightheaded.
