ServSafe Food Handler FAQs
Can I take my ServSafe test online? Both ServSafe coursework and exams are available in person and online. Note that online exams for the Food Handler and Alcohol/Primary do not require a proctor. All other exams, whether print or online, do require a proctor and would need to be taken at a test center.
What can I do with a ServSafe certificate?
Length of Exam The ServSafe Food Handler assessment is a 40-question, non-proctored test. It has no time limit, meaning test-takers may complete at their own pace. On average, test-takers work through the exam within 90 minutes.

The course takes approximately 60 to 90 munutes. The ServSafe Food Handler Exam is an untimed 40 question test. To receive a ServSafe Food Handler certificate, you must score better than 75% (i.e., answer more than 30 questions correctly).
ServSafe Food Handler The test contains 40 questions and is not timed. You must get 75% of the answers correct in order to pass the test, and you can take it as many times as you need to until you earn your ServSafe Food Handler certification.
You will need to purchase a new exam each time you need to retest. You can take the examination twice within 30 days. If you don't pass the exam on your second attempt, you must wait 60 days from your most recent attempt before taking the exam again. No more than four attempts are allowed within a 12 month period.
Certification Process A passing score is 75% or higher. This is obtained by answering at least 60 out of 80 questions correctly. The exam has 90 questions; however there are 10 pilot questions that are for research purposes only.
The ServSafe Manager exam is given in a proctored environment and has 90 multiple choice questions. You are required to score 75% or better on the exam to receive certification. There is a 2 hour time limit on the exam.
Certification Process The National Restaurant Association recognizes the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification for a five-year period. The ServSafe Alcohol, ServSafe Allergens and ServSafe Food Handler Certificates are recognized for a three-year period.
After the ServSafe® Allergens Online Course and Assessment has been purchased, it can be accessed in Course Management. Click on the Students tab and then Take Online Course. Please note, a User ID and Password for ServSafe.com is required. If you do not have one, select “Create New Profile” when prompted.
The ServSafe Manager exam involves 90 multiple choice questions. In order to pass, you must achieve a score of 75 percent or higher. You'll have approximately 90 minutes to finish the exam—it is important for you to complete all answers as any question left blank will be scored as wrong.

Remove aprons when leaving Park areas. For example, aprons should be removed and stored before taking out garbage or using the restroom. Never wipe your hands on your apron. A food handler will be wearing single-use gloves to chop lettuce for an hour.

An ideal training schedule is one 1-hour session every other workday at approximately the same time of day. For longer courses, we recommend that you view the entire course within three weeks.
Complete the course at least two days prior to your exam date. This will allow time to study and review. Review your posttest scores. The scores by section screen will help to identify which course topics you should review before taking the exam.
