Students enrolled in the Dual Pediatric Acute/Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Specialty are prepared for advanced nursing practice in both acute and primary care settings with populations of infants, children and adolescents. The curriculum is accomplished through 79 credit hours of course work, with 59 credit hours of didactic coursework and 20 credit hours of clinical practica, that is completed in nine or ten successive semesters depending on the semester of entry.
Admission Requirements: The minimum cumulative GPA for BSN applicants is 2.75 at the time of application (includes transfer students). Admission is competitive and is based on the space available. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 does not guarantee admission to the School of Nursing.

Pre-requisites: Students are eligible to apply if they will have successfully completed a minimum of 29 semester credit hours by the Application Deadline of the AMNP Pre-requisite Foundation Coursework (listed on the next page). Successful completion of all AMNP Pre-requisite Foundation Coursework with a “C” or above must be met prior to matriculation into the AMNP coursework. The final minimum cumulative/overall and Pre-requisite Foundation Coursework GPA must be a 3.0 or greater. Once you have applied through UAB Graduate School, and upon receipt of ALL official transcripts, your coursework will be evaluated for advisement purposes.
CLINICAL SCHEDULE: Clinical experiences for the MSN student are coordinated with your faculty. The student contracts to work with a clinical preceptor who is a certified registered nurse practitioner, a registered nurse, or a physician. The total number of clinical hours required varies depending on the specialty. Students must have a current RN license in the state where they do their clinical practice prior to enrolling in the advanced practice courses.
Resumes should not be more than one page in length. Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide proof of work/volunteer experience in a healthcare setting as part of the application process. The healthcare work is to be documented by letters from a supervisor (on agency letterhead). Completion of a nursing skills course does not meet these criteria.
The Accelerated Master’s Entry to Nursing Pathway (AMNP) is an alternate pathway into the existing master’s in nursing (MSN degree) for applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing, who are not registered nurses, and who seek MSN preparation.

54 Credits, 930 contact hours. Consists of 16 months of full-time study in which students complete the required courses and clinical experiences and are eligible to apply for licensure as a registered nurse. Students emerge with the knowledge and skills required to function as a registered nurse through an intense learning experience. Upon successful completion of pre-licensure requirements, the UAB University Registrar sends a certified letter to the Alabama Board of Nursing stating that students have successfully completed requirements and are eligible to take the National Certification Licensure Exam for RNs (NCLEX-RN). Students who successfully complete the NCLEX-RN may apply for licensure and for employment as a Registered Nurse.
The Certificate can be completed in four semesters.

Upon completion of the pathway the individuals is prepared to apply to sit for certification in the specialty area.
