You'll have loads of fun and adventure on the way as you cover three main course components:
Typically you can expect to take anywhere from a few weeks to 3 months. Some of my students have launched their courses in under 6 weeks while others look to launch a flagship course that can take 3-6 months. To create an online course you also have to take into account your own time.
PADI eLearning programs are valid for 12 months from the time you first log on. Prior to the end of this 12-month period, you’re reminded via email at 90 days and again at 60 days before the expiration date.
approximately 12 to 15 hoursThe PADI Open Water Diver eLearning should take approximately 12 to 15 hours to complete.
The PADI instructor exam or IE is usually spread over 2days. In some locations which have a large number of candidates, it can turn into a marathon extending over three days.
So, to answer the question, "Is the PADI Open Water certification hard?", the answer is that realistically, it is not hard at all. The average person can easily learn to dive but on the way, they will have to address psychological issues.
It's possible to complete your confined and open water dives in three or four days by completing the knowledge development portion via PADI eLearning, or other home study options offered by your local dive shop or resort.
All PADI courses comprise the following: Knowledge development: theory work to help you understand the basic principles of scuba diving. This is reviewed in a final test in which you must score 75% or higher. If you fail, you can retake the test.
Getting your PADI Certification is not hard, it's fun and it's an incredible experience, but you do need to follow the rules to make sure that your PADI Open Water Course is also a safe experience. After you have completed the PADI course you will receive the PADI Open Water Certification Card.
Your PADI certification never expires; but if you haven't been diving in a while, it's better to be over-prepared than risk a problem because you forget something important. Dive shops also appreciate seeing a recent ReActivated date on your certification card.
You don't need the PADI Training app to access your online material, only offline. You can use a mobile browser or desktop/laptop browser to complete your scuba training online whenever you have an internet connection.
There are four components to the PADI Open Water Diver course: theory, confined water work, waterskills asessement, and open water dives.

As well as having your Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and Rescue Diver certificates, you will need to complete five speciality courses.
The number of dives needed to complete the course means it can take anywhere between six weeks and six months to attain the certification.
The Rescue Diver course gives you valuable skills in emergency management. You’ll be trained to deal with scenarios where you may need to rescue a panicked or unresponsive diver, or even yourself.
