The Massachusetts State Police certifies individuals to instruct Firearms Safety to citizens and retired Law Enforcement Officers. The Firearms Instructor Certification Program and the LEOSA Instructor Certification aim to ensure that those who possess or carry firearms, rifles or shotguns, do so in a safe and responsible manner.
All Firearms Instructor's Certification expires after two years and must be renewed prior to expiration to maintain certification. Firearms Instructor Certification expires every two calendar years.

LTCs shall expire on the cardholder's birth date occurring not less than five (5) years but not more than six (6) years from the date of issue. License holders should receive notice and a renewal from the Massachusetts Firearms Record Bureau not les than ninety (90) days prior to expiration.
The argument is that once a licence has expired it comes to an end and cannot therefore be renewed, rendering possession of the firearm/s unlawful. Of course the best advice is to always apply for renewal of your licence in good time (at least 90 days before expiry).
