For a person to become a Texas LTC instructor you must take a 3 day LTC instructor course at the DPS training center in Florence, TX (near Austin). It’s actually two days in the classroom and about half a day at the range. The LTC instructor course is VERY EASY and on a basic level including the shooting portion.

That’s right, after taking our NRA course you will be a nationally certified NRA firearms instructor and qualify to become a Texas LTC instructor. After, successfully passing the online classroom portion, an applicant must attend 1-2 hours of range instruction class and demonstrate handgun proficiency (shooting) with a Texas Qualified LTC Instructor.
If you have successfully completed your online classroom only training with an Approved Online Course provider, your Online Course provider will provide you an Online/Handgun Proficiency Training (LTC 101) form; however, you must take the LTC 101 form to a Qualified LTC Instructor to complete your handgun proficiency training.
The classroom instruction must cover the four (4) statutory required topics and may be a four to six hour course: 1 Laws that relate to weapons and the use of deadly force, 2 Handgun use and safety, including use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns, 3 Non-violent dispute resolution, 4 Proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child.
Per HB 48 (83rd Legislature), continuing education is no longer required for LTC renewal. License holders will simply apply online and submit the supporting documents for discounted fees or special conditions.
DPS does not regulate the cost charged by certified LTC instructors.

Yes. You must take a 10- to 15-hour class, taught by a DPS-certified instructor to obtain your original concealed handgun license.

If information obtained indicates you may have a disqualifying offense, you will be sent a request for additional information You will have 90 days to provide the requested documentation. If we do not receive the documents as requested, your application will be terminated as incomplete.
The law change was designed to allow those long time license holders to only need to take the class every ten years.
Q: How long is the license valid? A: Initial licenses are valid for (4) year terms. Renewal licenses are valid for (5) years. The license will remain valid as long as you continue to meet all the eligibility criteria.
If you are in another state that has reciprocity with Texas you must follow that state’s laws for carrying a concealed handgun. The same responsibility applies to anyone from that other state when traveling in Texas; they must follow the Texas laws for carrying a concealed handgun.
