36 hoursThe National Pool Lifeguard Qualification course is a minimum of 36 hours, followed by a practical assessment on swimming pool theory, water safety and how to spot potential hazards. If an NPLQ candidate fails their assessment, how many times can they retake the assessment? A candidate can retake the failed section(s) as many times as they wish within 28 days from the date of the first failure (28 days includes the day in which assessment part(s) were passed).

New York State requires all lifeguard supervisors to take the lifeguard management in person exam. Nassau County has another option for lifeguards who want to be an aquatic supervisor, they are able to take the Pool Activity Leader class.

CPR Certification – Currently certified as having successfully completed a course in providing one person adult, two person adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including ob-structed airway training, accepted by the Federal Government or by the state government in the state of employment. Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front. 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.
Prerequisites: Must be 16 years old by the end of the class. Tread water for at least 2 minutes. Swim 100 yards of front crawl. Swim 50 yards each of: front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke with head up, inverted breaststroke kick with hands on stomach.

Lifeguards work 48 hours each week and first-year lifeguards earn a minimum of $16 an hour, for a weekly salary of about $800. Parks’ beaches open on Memorial Day weekend, and pools open in late June; both close the Sunday after Labor Day.
To qualify, you must: 1 Be at least 16 years of age by the start of employment. 2 Have at least 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other - without corrective lenses.#N#Glasses and contact lenses may not be worn during the eye exam. 3 Be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds or less, with proper form.
Registration is required. You may try out as many times as you would like until you've passed the test. Please make sure to bring a bathing suit, a towel, and a lock (for your locker), and wear a face covering in the building and on the deck but not in the water. Goggles are optional.

The purpose of this American Red Cross course is to provide an alternative to having mandated lifeguard staff during camp trips where there will be swimming and aquatic activities at already guarded facilities by providing training to trip leaders which include portions of the American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue, Waterfront Lifeguarding, and Lifeguard Management curriculum.
The purpose of the Safety Training for Swim Coaches course is to teach those involved in competitive swimming, including coaches, officials, athletic trainers and aquatic exercise trainers, how to help maintain a safe and comfortable environment for swimmers, prevent accidents and emergencies, and respond to swimmers with illnesses or injuries in water or on land. This program is offered in a blended learning format.
This course will teach water safety and introduce participants to the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard; however, this course will not certify anyone to be a lifeguard. It will build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills in preparation for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course.
