Preparing for the NCLEX can be a challenging task! One of the questions many new graduates ask about their NCLEX prep is: How long do I need to study for the NCLEX? Recommended study times may vary depending upon the level of preparation needed and can range anywhere from 4 – 8 weeks. This article will provide a four-week strategy for how to study for the NCLEX in 30 days!
This week, spend 2-4 hours developing a study schedule. You can use a blank sheet of paper with thirty boxes or a digital or paper planner. If you already keep a personal calendar, consider integrating your study schedule with the system you already use. First, select an NCLEX Test Date and write it on your calendar. You can always change this later, but having a date to work towards will help guide your studying. Once your test date is set, work on scheduling practice tests, along with review and remediation times for filling in for the remaining dates leading up to test day.
Visit the NCLEX Test site in order to familiarize yourself with the location and how long it takes to travel there. This will prevent additional anxiety on the day of the test and give you an idea of how much travel time you’ll need.
Having this content refresher may assist you in selecting correct responses on future practice questions, especially if you are able to gain a clear understanding of why you responded to or answered a question the way that you did.
As test day approaches, your anxiety may begin to rise. Self-regulation techniques, such as mindfulness techniques (meditation, yoga, reciting positive affirmations) and exercise can help improve your focus and stamina while reducing anxiety. Negative self-talk may also cause a loss of focus and create additional stress.
In short, Kaplan offers users 6 months of access. For nursing students getting ready to take the NCLEX, this should be more than enough time. I have never heard of anybody needing more than just a couple months, unless they couldn’t pass and really struggled with multiple re-takes. Assuming this isn’t you (fingers crossed), 6 months should be plenty of time.
So in addition to the video lessons mentioned above, for those students that want to take some live classes, Kaplan offers a package with 18 hours of live class time. Generally these classes meet 6 different times for 3 hour sessions, usually spread out over the course of 1 or 2 weeks.
The NCLEX Channel offers you open access to frequent live lessons from one of Kaplan’s teachers via webcast. Most nights one of their instructors takes a deep dive into a particular topic tested on the NCLEX. These sessions go way into the weeds and provide some rock solid advice. I personally loved these classes; HOWEVER, if you’re already strong on the subject being covered that night, I’d say save your study time ammo for other things like practice sets.
In any event, I was very impressed with the Kaplan Qbank. With over 2,100 highly realistic practice questions, customizable delivery format, and some all-around solid explanations, they get very high marks in my book.
The bottom line with Kapan’s video lessons is that the production quality and delivery format is not the coolest thing I’ve sever seen (far from), but the content in these videos is invaluable.
Overall, I was very impressed with the Kaplan NCLEX prep course. The practice questions in their Qbank are highly realistic of real NCLEX problems, and when coupled with the tech behind their simulated exams, you get a real exam-like experience. In addition, their video lessons and optional live classes provide some killer content review that you just don’t get with other prep providers.
Like the quality of the tech behind their CATs, their overall platform is awesome. One of the nice things about paying up for Kaplan over another course is that whereas cheaper NCLEX prep providers have sort of crummy platforms, Kaplan’s is fantastic.

I find Kaplan NCLEX’s overall course model effective because it employs strategies that are in line with the NCLEX trends. Therefore, they would let you practice with questions that are similar to the actual exam. Plus, they also use the decision tree method to develop your clinical reasoning.
Second, what I appreciate about the Kaplan NCLEX review course is its inclusion of a 500+ page e-book. Not all NCLEX test prep providers provide that. Even more, this Kaplan NCLEX review book is offered on top of Kaplan NCLEX’s other impressive features, such as mobile app and content review guide.
Practice Pack – This practice option has complete features like 3 full-length NCLEX computer-adaptive tests, 180-day-access to their 2,100+ Qbank, and 24/7 access to live and/or recorded video lessons on their nursing channel.
If you don’t pass the NCLEX test after taking the Kaplan nursing test prep, then you can get your money back or an additional 3-month-enrollment.
Finally, the preparation and support from their 600 licensed nurses ( 2) make their course a worthy investment. Your instructors are top-notch in the NCLEX quest and the overall Kaplan NCLEX team is highly knowledgeable about what they do.
