There is nothing in the NC state law that stipulates the length of time the certificate is valid for. This means it is up to the discretion of your sheriff so the time frame in which it will be honored can vary greatly. With this in mind we tell all of our students to take it to their sheriff AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

The Specialized Firearms Instructor Training Course is a North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission mandated program consisting of 81 hours of specialized instruction.
The Criminal Justice Standards Division will mail the instructor an approval letter once the renewal process is completed. Instructors may re-order student certificates at any time utilizing the Concealed Carry Handgun Certificate Re-Order Form (CCH-1). Certificates are available in multiples of 25 at a cost of $2.00 per certificate.

The Defensive Handgun: Shooting on the Move (SOTM) course focuses on increasing the student’s ability to effectively use a handgun during defensive situations while moving. Material to be covered includes: forward/rearward/lateral movement, clearing malfunctions on the move, use of cover, weapon transitions, and multiple target engagement.
I believe it's good for 5 years. I know it says good for 5 years from date of receipt on a purchase permit and I think my CCW certificate said the same thing.
I took mine in after 5 1/2 years in Guilford County, and it was no problem. They said it doesn't expire. Not sure about other counties.
It is at the discretion of the Sheriff. Some won't taken a CCH certificate over a year old and others don't care one way or another. The law doesn't speak to any expiration, only that you took the class and have the original certificate.
I just took mine in after 7 years. Cleveland county wasn't going to.turn down there $90
