Shadow Creek – An Exclusive Golf Club in Las Vegas. Looking for a one-of-a-kind experience on the golf course? Because after playing Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nevada, we can say without batting an eyelash that the place is off the charts. It’s a true gem, hidden amongst massive trees in the northern portion of Sin City.
While all 18 holes at Shadow Creek are fantastic, it’s pretty safe to say that the 17 th would be the popular choice for “favorite hole on the course” if you surveyed 100 people who have played the track.
In fairness, what Wynn asked of Fazio was far more than lending a helping hand. He asked him to achieve the nearly impossible task of transforming the blank canvas of dirt into an absolute masterpiece of a golf course, a place that the industry would revel in.
Shadow Creek is a good place to start. When you walk around the inside of the clubhouse and look at the names on the lockers, it’s quite easy to get star-struck. Take your pick between the richest CEOs on the planet to the most powerful men in America.
Wynn was busy making a name for himself by building the fanciest hotel-casinos in town when the opportunity presented itself. He knew he had a collection of individuals that liked to travel to Las Vegas and gamble away hundreds of thousands of dollars on a whim.
The last par 4 on the front side is anything but a “cinch par,” even for the low-handicap players. At 460 yards and playing back uphill, this hole presents plenty of problems for players that miss the fairway.
It’s not a coincidence that Shadow Creek was built in the midst of the Las Vegas Strip, blowing up into a nationally-known phenomenon. This guide won’t be all about the fancy lights, though, as we’ll open your eyes to what the layout is like and how pristine the conditions are. There is a gentleman by the name of Michael Jordan.
Shadow Creek opened for play in 1989 and Tom Fazio & Andy Banfield sculptured it out of the rugged Nevada desert. It’s set in the most breathtaking location with the majestic mountains as the backdrop and seeing really is believing.
In 1989, Shadow Creek debuted at No.8, the highest debut in the history of the Top 100. The course was dreamed up by casino guru Steve Wynn and designed by Tom Fazio. If Shadow Creek doesn’t prove Tom Fazio ’s design genius, I don’t know what does….
What many people fail to understand about Shadow Creek is that the primary storyline on the course is how it came into being and how when you visit you're serviced like a top tier VIP when going there. The grand vision of the original owner Steve Wynn was truly brilliant -- create a desert oasis on non-descript land and tie that to his various properties for marketing purposes. It helped that Wynn hired Tom Fazio -- the master at creating visual treats -- to create the poster child course symbolizing the impact of eye-candy design.
A Golfer’s Dream, by Larry Berle, tells the story of how a regular guy conquered America’s Top 100 Golf Courses (following Golf Digest’s 2001/2002 list). Larry has exclusively rated for us every course in the hundred, using our golf ball rating system. However, Larry did not rate the 100 courses against every golf course he has played, but instead he rated them in relation to each other within the hundred. Consequently, in some cases, his rating may seem rather low. A Golfer’s Dream is available in Kindle format and also on Kindle Unlimited via Amazon... click the link for more.
Since the temperature is normally around 100 degrees, a golf cart is a good idea. The course is beautifully laid out and challenging. The mountains in the background create a dramatic backdrop. There are pheasants running loose throughout the course and they are a nice touch, if a bit surreal.
Shadow Creek is a must for any golfer who enjoys the finer things of life. The 17th and 18th are two great finishing holes which can totally change your medal card or matchplay game.
It’s interesting to note that you think 17 is an “over-done stinker” and yet Golf Digest consider it a feature hole in their coffee-table book ‘American Classic Courses’. They say the 17th is “a step into another world. Staring from the tee of this downhill par 3, not only do you believe you are in the barren desert, you’re not sure you’re even on the planet Earth. This is something of a dreamworld, as a choir of imported pine trees accented by a waterfall envelop a tiny green guarded by water and bunkers on all sides. All of this topography was created by Tom Fazio from the flat desert land, an effect Steve Wynn giddily called “an obvious crowd pleaser.” In club history, Wynn says of the 17th, “Had we delivered this kind of treatment too often, it might have been excessive. But it was irresistible to do it once.””
Perhaps you've never heard tales of this legendary place sculpted from the Nevada desert by renowned architect Tom Fazio. May we assure you, descriptions, however grand, do not begin to do this masterpiece justice. Shadow Creek must be played. Shadow Creek must be experienced.
Shadow Creek is without a doubt one of the most unique golf course experiences in the world. In fact, I believe if a non-golfer ever visited the course, they would say it is one of the most amazing places they ever visited.
So I just got back from Vegas and I was fortunate to play Shadow Creek with one other friend.
