Jan 21, 2013 · Most books about St. Andrews document the many changes at the Old Course. There was uproar when “Old Tom” converted fairways from heather to turf. The course reversed its routing, which is perhaps the most radical change ever. When I first played there in 1980, locals were lamenting that the new irrigation system had ruined the course forever.

Apr 22, 2018 · Some insist the Home of Golf has always evolved, changed and adapted over time, in tune with the sport itself. Just as many, though, stand firm that the Old Course must be an immovable monument to all that is best in the game Scotland gave to the world. And then there are still others who see a mixture of those two views as the way ahead.

The centuries-old edict to refrain from golf on Sundays is a sacred part of the Old Course's traditions. The word 'golf' is not an acronym for anything. Rather, it derives linguistically from the Dutch word 'kolf' or 'kolve,' meaning quite simply 'club. ' In the Scottish dialect of the late 14th or early 15th century, the Dutch term became 'goff' or 'gouff,' and only later in the 16th century 'golf. '
ScotlandThe modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland. The 18-hole round was created at the Old Course at St Andrews in 1764.
In 1764, the golfers at St Andrews decided to combine the first four short holes into two, to produce a round of 18 holes, though it was still 10 holes of which 8 were played twice. Thus was born the 18-hole round, though it would be hundred years before there were eighteen holes and other courses followed suit.
History. Musselburgh was once certified as being the oldest golf course in the world by Guinness World Records; recently this 'record' was reassigned to St Andrews. There is documented evidence that golf was played at the links in 1672, while it is claimed that Mary, Queen of Scots, played nearby (at Seton) in 1567.
The Dutch talk of a 13th-century sport called "colf"; the French say they first had the idea with "palle-mail" in the 1400s; but it is the Scots who have been most widely credited with having invented the game of golf.Jan 12, 2006
The last major change to the river’s course in the Vicksburg area occurred in 1876. On April 26 of that year, the Mississippi River suddenly changed courses, leaving Vicksburg high and dry.
There are several factors that contribute to the change in courses of the Mississippi River. The main factor is energy . The Mississippi is a very curvy, knowns as meandering, river.
These meanders that became cut off from the rest of the river system create lakes known as abandoned meanders or oxbow lakes. Many of these abandoned meanders provide important marshland wildlife habitat. The last major change to the river’s course in the Vicksburg area occurred in 1876.
