Apr 04, 2016 · The Masters celebrates its past victors like no other tournament. More than the first major of the year, the Masters is also a mark of golfing longevity, so it is little surprise that in this category the name at the top of the Masters leaderboard is Gary Player: 52 Masters appearances between 1957 and 2009 and a total of 164 Masters rounds played.
The Masters is played each year at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. It’s the only one of the four men’s major championships that is played every year on the same course.
The Masters is a 72-hole stroke play event contested over four days. The field is one of the smaller ones on the PGA Tour schedule, typically featuring between 90-100 players.

In order to make the cut after 36 holes, players must be in the top 50 places, counting ties. Previously, those within 10 strokes of the lead also made the cut, but that rule was changed for the 2020 Masters.
This “corner” of the golf course is where some of the tournament’s most historic moments have taken place.
The 2021 Masters will take place as scheduled, April 8-11.
The membership costs at Augusta are relatively low for a club of its stature. The initiation fee is estimated to be in the range of $40,000. And the yearly dues are estimated at “a few thousand” dollars per year. There are other costs involved, whether for guest fees or on-site lodging, but those are also relatively low.
In all, there are just over 100 beds available to stay on the Augusta National property. That includes 10 cabins. Seven of those are in a semi-circle to the left of the 10th hole (think Rory in 2011 territory) while the three most famous — the Eisenhower, Butler and Cliff Roberts cabins — stand more visible nearer the clubhouse.
When USA Today published a list of Augusta National’s membership fr0m 2002, 39-year-old Jefferson B.A. Knox was listed as the youngest. He was a fantastic player then and has emerged as a cult hero around the club.
Augusta National members are each issued one green jacket, for which they are charged a small fee. They aren’t allowed to remove these jackets from the grounds. Instead, a member will arrive on property to find his or her jacket freshly prepared in the locker room.
Knox reportedly owns the course record from the member’s tees with a 61.
Augusta National members are easily visible during Masters Week, dressed in green jackets and nametags as they play host to the famed “patrons” arriving on their course. The rest of the year, however, the club and its members are shrouded in privacy. Still, we’ve gleaned plenty of insider info over the years on how things are conducted up Magnolia Lane. However, there have been a couple "undercover operations" to produce estimated course and slope ratings, and the short version is that Augusta National has a course rating estimated around 78.1 and a slope rating estimated around 137 .
The most-recent change in length happened prior to the 2019 Masters, when 40 yards was added to the fifth hole. That increased the hole's yardage from 455 yards to 495 yards. Augusta National acquired land on which to move back the No. 5 teeing area by working to re-route Berckmans Road along the club's perimeter.
The longest hole at Augusta National is the second, at 575 yards. The shortest hole is the 12th, at 155 yards. The toughest hole on the course is No. 10, a par-4 that historically has played to a 4.31-stroke average during The Masters Tournament.
Perhaps you noticed that Augusta National always measures to a yardage ending in zero or five. The club poobahs like nice, round numbers. Spieth has shot 64. Tiger Woods has won four Masters, but his best round is 65.
At the U.S. Open, six players have shot 63, although only one — Justin Thomas — fired his on a par 72. At the PGA Championship, more 63s have been shot than at any other major, most recently by Brooks Koepka and Charl Schwartzel in 2018.
When Jordan Spieth poured in a lengthy birdie putt on No. 16 at the 2018 Masters, it got him right into the thick of contention. But it also gave him a chance at something else: the Augusta National course record. Spieth arrived at the 17th tee at nine under par, but made a par at No. 17 and a bogey at 18 to fall just shy of the course record.
Had Spieth made birdie at 18, he would have tied Patrick Reed’s eventual winning score of 15 under. But a birdie would also have broken the course record, which has stood for 33 years, when it was set by Nick Price in 1986. On Saturday, April 12 1986, Price teed off early — he had barely made the cut after rounds of 79-69 to start the Masters.
