Beaches. Please note that while the Palmetto Dunes Resort is private, the beach is public and is under the jurisdiction of the Town of Hilton Head Island. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Department patrols the beaches and enforces all beach regulations.

Alligators are regularly observed in and around bodies of water in Palmetto Dunes. If you encounter an alligator that is aggressive or have a safety concern, please call Dispatch at 843-785-1120.
All of the beach is public, from the ocean to the high water mark. Access to the beach, however, is often private. For beach access within the resort, use the Dunes House, the Disney Beach House, or any of the access paths along Mooring Buoy or Ocean Lane.

It began in the mid-1960s, when several physicians and business executives from Greenwood, South Carolina entered into an innovative business venture with Charles Fraser. For $1,000 an acre, the group bought a 2,000-acre no man's land on Hilton Head Island. The property would become Palmetto Dunes Resort.
This majestic 68-acre plantation has been designated as the last open portion of Hilton Head Island, allowing the Coastal Discovery Museum to showcase this historic property and the area's cultural heritage and natural history. Visitors can travel back in time to view the historic Lowcountry.
