Chambers Bay is a walking only course, and it's a substantial walk – approximately eight miles with plenty of elevation. To preserve your energy and enhance your experience, I strongly recommend taking a caddie.
Yes, Chambers Bay is a “walking only” course, and that makes this very good experience even better. The views across this course and Puget Sound are unmatched.

The first at Chambers Bay is the toughest opening hole I have ever seen. This uphill Par 4 will play like a Par 5 for most golfers. The first and eighteenth fairways are combined, with mounds and bunkers breaking up the flow. A solid drive will leave about two hundred yards, uphill, to a green with large mounds on the right and a steep drop to the left. A large undulating putting surface awaits the well placed approach.
One of the benefits of slower greens is that the golfer can play an attacking ground game without worrying about bump and runs rolling off the green into waiting bunkers and waste areas. Aggressive golf can be a lot of fun and the ground game is a vital element in scoring at Chambers Bay.
After a fairly long uphill green to tee transfer, the golfer is looking out at what may be one of the most daunting three shotters in the world. A gnarly waste area runs the length of this long hole and the green will only accept a well placed third. It is likely that golfers have spent many a shot trying to escape the waste area in front of the green.
The trio of fine two shotters is completed by the all world seventh. The golfer is called upon to bite off as much as he can chew on this epic drive that must carry a massive waste bunker. If the tee shot on the seventh cannot get your heart-pumping then you may not be alive. There is nothing more satisfying than taking it at the left side of the first mound and making the fairway.

The daunting approach is a sobering moment for the golfer who just smashed a drive over the waste area. An optimal second will carry the false front and finish at the back of the green. Anything short or landing on the false front will roll back by the mound. At least two extra clubs are needed to manage the elevation change which means that even a good drive will often lead to a mid or long iron approach.
A large fairway awaits the golfer off the tee, but often the best line is fairly tight to the mounding on the right.
The Chambers Bay Loop combines Grandview Trail, Soundview Trail and Central Meadow Outer Loop for a full tour of the park.

Erin Hills stretches to a whopping 7,735 yards, a true major championship test, compared to Mayacama's seemingly short 6,787 yards - almost a full 1,000 yards shorter. But it's not that simple. Despite the yardage disparity, I took more steps at Mayacama than Erin Hills, according to my Fitbit.
Mayacama, one of the most exclusive private clubs in northern California, climbs the hilly, rugged landscape of wine country. Erin Hills, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Ron Whitten, is grand in scale, characterized by wide fairways and huge greens. Wispy fescue lines each hole.
The hill on Gullane No. 2 in Scotland, the dunes of Enniscrone in Ireland and the blind shots of Royal County Down in Northern Ireland come to mind. The good news is, usually, the views revealed are just as breathtaking. They can help you forget how much your legs are burning.
Opened in the 1930s, Highlands Links in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is an 8-plus-mile walk and one of Managing Editor Brandon Tucker's favorite rounds in the world. Back then, caddies packed picnics and a round was an all-day affair.
Chambers Bay, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Jay Blasi, was built in the bowels of a former gravel pit near the shores of Washington's Puget Sound. Such a rare site presents unique challenges on the ground.
There are virtually no forced carries except a single pond. On the other hand, Mayacama by Jack Nicklaus can feel tight at times. It is loaded with cross hazards in the form of ponds and canyons. Players must cross bridges and navigate a steep staircase to reach certain greens.
It's too bad because walking provides a certain rhythm to the round, and leaves you feeling more intimately connected to the course you're playing. It's great exercise. I feel like I play better walking ... except when the walking gets tough, the golf gets tougher, too.
A group caddie works with all players in your group without carrying a bag. As opposed to a forecaddie, our group caddie stays with your group and does not walk ahead. He or she will describe the best play for each hole, assist with yardages, help around the greens, tend the pin and perform any other duties required.
In an effort to ensure all players have an opportunity to book tee times, we require that you cancel or modify your reservation at least 48 hours before your scheduled tee time. Failure to do so will result in a cancellation charge equal to the applicable green fees associated with the day of scheduled play.
Guests are permitted to make independent arrangements for caddies outside the Chambers Bay caddie program.
Personal pull-carts are welcome at Chambers Bay. Riksha pull-carts are also available on-site and are included with your green fees. While the pull-carts utilized at Chambers Bay are designed for minimal wear, we ask that they not be pulled across putting surfaces (inside sprinkler heads).
