If you are mostly interested in seeing the Mayan ruins, relaxing on the beach, and partaking in watersports, then Tulum will be the better choice. If you are more interested in enjoying a calmer, stiller beach with more wildlife tours, and a relaxed environment, Akumal will be the better choice for you.
This beach welcomes thousands of visitors every year and is famous for swimming with the turtles in Mexico but also for its white sands, warm waters, and rich marine life. Akumal Beach is extremely beautiful and worth visiting.
Once a secret, Akumal has become a popular beach destination in the Riviera Maya. Located 100 km (62 miles) south of Cancún, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, this quaint beach town boasts some of the finest white sand beaches in the Riviera Maya with lots of natural palm tree shade.
The main public entrance to Akumal beach costs $6, and their main purpose, after admission, is to sell guided snorkel tours for beginners. (Tour and equipment, of course, at extra fee).
It's a nice quiet road through a residential area. over a year ago. Hello, It is possible to walk. However, I personally do not recommend it because the weather is very, very hot.
You'll be glad to know that swimming in Akumal Bay is absolutely free. Yes, free. That said, lodging, parking, life vests and snorkel gear are not free nor is the use of restrooms so do bring your pesos to pay for the use of these facilities or equipment.
Akumal and Playa del Carmen are both beach destinations. But when it comes to which one has the best Caribbean beach, Akumal is unquestionably the winner. A short but wide and fluffy sand beach will greet you upon your arrival.
Akumal's crime rate is very low! It's a small beach town. Most of the hotels in the area have a security at each entrance to ensure visitors feel safe.

The turtles are there year round. Go to Akumal Bay, its pretty dependable to see them. However, remember ... they are wild and can go & come as they please, so there is no gaurantee. Best to see them early in the morning, before things get a little busier.
Akumal is one of the world's best places for sightings of sea turtles, as they breed and feed in the sheltered coves along the Riviera Maya. In addition, you will often see moray eels, stingrays, nurse sharks, reef sharks, octopus, lobsters, and huge pelagic fish like marlin, sailfish, or giant grouper.
The only way to swim with the turtles is to book a tour with a registered tour company or stay in one of the neighboring hotels, like the Akumal Bay Resort or Secrets Akumal.
