What is the history of Wigwam Resort?

Unveiled in the late 1920s, Wigwam was the first big resort to open in Arizona. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed two 18-hole layouts (the Gold and the Blue) in the mid-1960s, before Red Lawrence added another nearby course (appropriately named the Red) a decade later. That was back when the property was called the Goodyear Golf & Country Club.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Wigwam for a few nights. The resort exuded southwest charm and style. The grounds are beautiful and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We ate in the Wigwam bar a few times and the food was very good. Resort pool is beautiful and the staff was attentive.

The first hole is a straight forward par-5, lined with out of bounds to the right and left, and fairway bunkers on the right. Do your best to place your drive left of the fairway bunkers, which will give you a chance at the green in two shots. If you can’t stay left of the bunkers, lay it up at your favorite wedge distance and stick it close.

Blue Course at Wigwam Resort: The verdict

On this review round, Wigwam Blue was just coming out of overseed, just reopening after renovation really. The greens were still ragged and inconsistent (you truly needed to hit it to get a putt to the cup). Yardage markers were sometimes nonexistent.
