Players use their putters to hit the golf ball from the tee area and straight into the hole. You must complete each hole in number order without skipping any hole. You will want to hit the ball gently and measured for good scores. That's it!
A regulation golf course usually consists of 18 holes of varied length. There are generally four short holes, 130 to 200 yards (par 3); ten average holes 350 to 400 yards (par 4); and four long holes 450 to 550 yards (par 5).
Over the century-plus the USGA has issued these guidelines, the distances haven't changed much -- approximately 25 yards on par 3s (from 225 yards to 250 yards), and that playing out through the rest of the par designations.
Continuing with the 20-second shot approach, we deduce that an 18-hole round of mini-golf takes 25-minutes to 50-minutes. From previous experience, I suggest finding a quieter time to visit the course, as a 2-ball.
A short par 3 course can be built on as little as 25 acres, while a full-length elite course can require up to 140 acres of land. But the land requirements vary based on your location, size of course, and the difficulty of the course.
According to the website Scottish Golf History, the number was cut to 18 pretty arbitrarily when four short holes were combined into two (played in two directions) in 1764. And this still wasn't a template right away for other courses as evidenced by Prestwick Golf Club opening in 1851 with just 12 holes.

Our definition of a "Short course" is any course that is less than a par 70 or 6,000 yards. This means everything from par-3 courses to regulation-length 9-hole courses to 18-hole executive courses are eligible as long as they are publicly accessible.
Merion Golf Club may have the best collection of shortish par 4s in the world. There's a reason it's one of my all time favorite courses. But the 10th, is the shortest of them all measuring a mere 303 yards, again, you'd be lulled into thinking it's easy.
Mini golf courses tend to be profitable businesses—and sometimes very lucrative—because of their business model.
It takes three to four people about an hour and a half to play 18 holes of mini-golf. That figure is based on each hole for four people taking about 5 minutes, ten at the most. If ten minutes is more likely, 3 hours is a more reasonable time estimate.
between 25–40 minutesA round of nine holes can take anywhere between 25–40 minutes.
executive courseA "9-hole course", typically the type referred to as an "executive course", has only 9 holes instead of 18, but with the otherwise normal mix of par-3, par-4 and par-5 holes (typically producing a par score of between 34 and 36), and the course can be played through once for a short game, or twice for a full round.
At the individual level, an average 18-hole golf course covers 150 acres, approximately 100 (67 percent) of which is maintained turfgrass. This area is predominantly comprised of rough (51 acres) and fairways (30 acres).
A 9-hole course is exactly what it says – a golf course with 9 holes. Like 18-hole golf courses, a 9-hole golf course is mostly comprised of par-4 holes plus a combination of par-3 and par-5 holes.
Approach course: An approach course is one that is even shorter than a par-3 course, one designed primarily to allow experienced golfers to practice pitching and chipping, or intended for use by beginners.

The outdoor footprint is usually larger than an indoor course. The average area for an outdoor mini golf course is 22,000 sq. ft. Miniature golf courses can be built in unique spaces and we can use as little area as 13,000 sq. ft. and have gone up to as large as 30,000 sq. ft. question_answer.
An average area for an indoor course will use 6,500 sq. ft. but can go as small as 2,500 sq. ft. or as big as 10,000 sq. ft. Usually when building indoors, you will usually use a smaller area than an outdoor mini golf course. question_answer.
The reason why miniature golf is usually one of the highest grossing attractions at a family entertainment center is that anyone can play. There are no restrictions as to who can play. Our courses are ADA compliant so someone in a wheel chair can play.
The daily maintenance is just walking the course on occasions and picking up any debris you may find. Depending on whether you are indoors or outdoors, you may have a daily watering of plants and shrubs. A lot of people will install a drip watering system, and have it timed to go on as needed.
A lot of standalone miniature golf courses are in tourist markets that get new customers every day or every week. Some local trade markets will start out with mini golf but have plans to add to the location in the coming years. The more attractions you have at your location the larger draw you have to bring in more people and they are more likely to stay longer and spend more money.
We suggest you check with your local governing body to find out about approvals and permits. Miniature golf courses are not built as often as office buildings or other commercial developments, so your local governing body does not deal with them on a regular basis.
To avoid this, we’ve developed the Championship Style Miniature Golf Course. It uses three cups instead of just the standard 4″ white cup. While each hole has a white cup, around half of the holes have a 5″ red PENALTY CUP on the harder holes. These cups are strategically placed where the young and beginner putters will end up next to them. As printed on the score cards and at the start of the course, the cup is a one stroke penalty for everyone over 12 years old but not for children. This allows beginner putters to make the ball in an easier cup rather than always picking up the ball in frustration.
Over the years and through our experience, we have made the holes more challenging and have come up with a way to make the course more playable for beginner putters and young children. There is nothing more frustrating to a child or a mom than constantly not being able to putt out the ball before hitting the course stroke limit per hole (usually 6).
Now universally used for safety messages at attractions, it can be used to add atmosphere on a miniature golf course. Now you not only see the 1800s general store, but you can hear the horses bay and the wagons pass as you approach. On a nautical themed course, the ocean is heard while you stand near the wharf scene.

There are no absolute minimums and maximums for the area required. In general, an 18-hole outdoor miniature golf course commonly uses about one-half acre or 20,000 to 22,000 s.f. Your costs are effected because of the need to fill the vacant area with “something”, be it landscape, ground cover, concrete or water. In other words, use no more land surface than is required to accomplish your objective. Extra space may provide an opportunity for another revenue center….almost always a good thing.

The size of these indoor courses typically ranges from 6,000 square feet to 12,000 square feet. Castle Golf encourages course sizes to be closer to 9,000 s.f. than 6,000 s.f. whenever possible. Castle Golf also believes that an indoor miniature golf should be viewed in a different light than its outdoor counterpart.
The PLAYABILITY factor requires that the ball roll true, that it goes where you putt it. It also means that the holes are designed to match the customers in your market. For some, this may mean a course that places a premium on skill and challenge. For most, this will be a family friendly course that balances skill and novelty, a course that results in players of all ages having a fun experience. These decisions should be addressed during the design phase of your course development.
You should match the course to the market. In an area with high-volume potential, your course should be heavily themed to provide strong visual and emotional appeal. This inspires repeat play and high traffic that keeps you competitive with other nearby courses.
