The 17th on the Old Course is considered to be one of the most difficult holes in all of golf. On a course labelled the “Home of Golf” there are always going to be tests that push your golfing ability to the limit. The Road Hole is for sure the toughest test.
The hallowed Old Course lies on public ground, but there's no other place a golfer feels more privileged to play. The course isn't the most technically challenging, but teeing off in front of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club is as nerve-racking as it gets. Read “The Investment of St. Andrews.”
The Jubilee CourseThe Jubilee Course is considered by most locals to be the most difficult course at St Andrews. It is the closest course to West Sands Beach and is therefore the most exposed to the elements. The course has gorse lined, narrow, fairways and tough sloping greens.
All golfers on the St Andrews Old course are required to have a recognised handicap. Both men and women should have a handicap of 36 or lower. This is a new higher limit for men, introduced in 2020. All golfers must be able to present an official handicap or certificate prior to play on the Old course.
You will need a handicap certificate to play the Old Course. So be sure to register for one with the USGA or your local club in advance of your trip. Maximum allowed handicaps are 24 for men and 36 for women.
Anyone can play golf in St Andrews. Of the town's 10 golf courses only the Old Course requires a handicap and there are plenty of options depending on your budget.
Andrews, and out of all the courses that host the Open in Scotland, Carnoustie is usually the easiest to get on because there are the least amount of visitor restrictions and less demand than the Old Course. Carnoustie has two other courses next to the Championship links, but St.

Founded in 1413, the University of St Andrews is Scotland's oldest and highest-ranking university. Ranked 92nd in the world, it's particularly competitive in the following subjects: Theology, divinity and religious studies (18th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject)
The majority of Scottish courses do not offer caddies, but many of the mid and top tier courses most played by visitors will arrange caddies. Of those that do almost none, bar sometimes at the St Andrews Old course, will have caddies available for request on the day, without prior notice.
Women shall wear attire consistent with that acceptable on the golf course, except that no shorts are permitted.
Strategic options are endless on the Old. The fairways are hundreds of yards wide in places and many of the double greens are over 25,000 square feet. That combination leads to a huge variety of angles and pin placements that, in combination with the wind, mean no two rounds are ever alike.
The Old Course at St Andrews is one of the most iconic in all of golf, earning it the nickname “The Home of Golf” and for good reason too! St Andrews last held The Open in 2015. These tips and tricks can help get you through in one piece or at least without losing an entire bag full of balls.
St Andrews at Christmas is truly magical...yes we may be slightly biased, but we're certain that visitors and locals will agree! Find out what you can get up to in St Andrews at Christmas time in our latest blog piece.
For a round, it costs about the same as your normal PGA Tour venue open to the public. Depending on the exchange rate, the 2018 green fee to play the Old Course is 180 pounds, which is about $250.
The Old Course holds a tee-sheet ballot every day the course is open to the public, and golfers (minimum of two) can enter the drawing, which is announced two days prior to play (so Wednesday tee times are announced Monday afternoon).
The smarter way to get a guaranteed tee time at the posted green fee rate for that season is to write or email the St. Andrews Links Trust ( www.StAndrews.org.uk ). Each fall, the Trust holds an open period to accept group-booking requests. The more golfers you have in your group, the tougher it will be to accommodate everyone, but this is a surefire way for smaller groups that can commit to a date well in advance. Tour operators can help you submit these requests if you'd like to use one for your trip.
The easiest option -- and most expensive -- is to book a golf package with a guaranteed tee time. While the packages used to be almost solely provided by the Old Course Experience, the Links Trust has since spread out the times to about 90 local providers, from golf packagers to local hotels and B&Bs. One new nugget for 2018, the Links Trust has partnered with ReCounter, a photography service that will photograph groups on a guaranteed time on the 1st, 17th and 18th holes and provide those groups with a code to view, share and download their images.
To date, his golf travels have taken him to over two dozen countries and nearly 600 golf courses worldwide. While he's played some of the most prestigious courses in the world, Tucker's favorite way to play the game is on a great muni in under three hours.
Good for each of the courses except the Old, you can set up tee times in advance for your morning round at any course and then have space-available replays in the afternoon. This is especially ideal for those willing to enter the Old Course Lottery during their stay in St. Andrews.
So if you stay three or four days in St. Andrews, plan on entering the lottery for every day you are there , but book some "safety" tee times at nearby courses. These clubs know about the Old's ballot policy, and just about all of them are happy to give you a rain check should you earn a ballot spot the day you're supposed to play their course (just mention your plans to do so when booking with the course). Many clubs now offer online tee times as well so you can make last-minute arrangements.
The first of six holes to be played back towards the Auld Grey Toon of St Andrews, the eighth is one of only two par-3s on the Old Course. As it often plays downwind and has a green that falls away from front to back, it can be difficult to hold the putting surface. Anyone looking to land the ball on the front portion of the green risks finding a high lipped bunker just ahead of the short grass.
Expect to see birdies and eagles aplenty at the fifth, the first of only two par-5s on the Old Course. Those who find the fairway off the tee will fancy their chances of firing a second shot over the Spectacles bunkers and finding a putting surface that is an astonishing 100 yards long. A deep swale guards the green and makes it tougher to get home in two, but the world's best will be confident of picking up at least one shot here.
The Road Hole is undoubtedly the Old Course's most demanding test and regarded by many as the toughest par-4 in golf. It has consistently played to a scoring average well above its par at The Open, including an average of 4.79 in 1984 and 4.65 when St Andrews last hosted the Championship in 2015. The tee shot needs to be fired over the corner of the Old Course Hotel to find the fairway, although many will bail out left with out of bounds to the right. An even trickier challenge awaits with an approach to the shallowest of greens, protected by the cavernous Road Hole bunker at the front and a path and wall to the back. Miguel Angel Jimenez famously played a rebound shot off the wall in 2010, but many others have come to grief here.

It is not hard to spot the biggest danger on the third, the huge Cartgate bunker guarding the front of a green that is shared with the 15th. Staying to the left is generally the safest bet off the tee on the Old Course's front nine, but doing so on this par-4 will bring the most significant sand trap into play, whereas a bold drive down the right half of the fairway leaves a much simpler approach to a green shared with the 15th.
St Andrews nightlife, according to students. St Andrews has a ton of pubs spread over the three main streets. This means the nightlife is very centralised, and people are constantly seeing friends. (Second year student, University of St Andrews)
Golf. St Andrews is considered the birthplace of golf, and a mecca for fans and players alike. The Old Course is the oldest course in the world..
St Andrews doesn’t really have neighbourhoods, however there are some residential areas outside of the three main streets. I’m lucky to live on Market Street this year, which [is] a great location, but can be loud at night with all the crazy students. The flats in the centre tend to be smaller and more expensive.
Lade Braes is a beautiful walk. At one end, there's a large park where it's lovely to sit and read. The pier and beaches are also very calming, and it's easy to find a quiet spot. The Botanical Gardens are also very peaceful. (Second year student, University of St Andrews)
Sat remotely on the blustery Scottish coast of Fife, St Andrews has the country’s oldest university, and is the spiritual home of golf. It's a small town so it is impossible to get lost, but there's still plenty to see and do. With three beaches and beautiful historic buildings, there is no shortage of sights to see.
