Starr lives in the primarily black, lower-class neighborhood of Garden Heights but attends Williamson Prep, a wealthy, predominantly white school in another town.

Like many other black girls, Starr learns to suppress her pain while still being present for everyone else she cares about. In The Hate U Give, Starr carried both the secret of knowing who killed Natasha and the shame of not being brave enough to tell someone.

Climax Starr testifies before the grand jury, finally bringing to light the full truth of what happened the night Khalil died. After this testimony, Starr has done all she can do to seek justice for Khalil. Falling action The grand jury decides not to prosecute One-Fifteen.
Starr realizes that she has been hiding, engaging in subtle code switching around Chris out of fear he would pity and think less of her. Starr has felt guilty for dating Chris ever since Khalil's death, and has been trying to navigate how to be with someone from such a different world.
Starr code switches once again upon talking to the detectives, knowing all too well that she will be taken more seriously if she acts in a more “white” manner.
Because of the emotional fallout from Khalil's murder, Starr misses Chris. Starr had initially gotten angry at Chris because he took out a condom while they made out. She previously told Chris she was not ready for sex because of her fear of getting pregnant, and so was angry at him for having a condom.
Starr goes to Khalil's home where Miss Rosalie tells Starr she can take whatever she wants from Khalil's room. She goes in and finds the "Harry Potter" wands that they used to play with. With her closing words, Starr vows to live up to her namesake and light up the darkness.
