This form is due to the Registrar’s Office on or before Friday of eighth week of the quarter during which CreditNo Credit is a course registration option
Students who take a course for a CR/NC grade may retake the course for a letter grade.
Once declared a CreditNo Credit course, the course cannot be converted back to a letter-graded course. Declaration of a course as CreditNo Credit makes the student ineligible for the Dean’s List consideration for that quarter.
Letter-graded courses taken as CR/NC may not count towards any major, minor, or concentration (including required cognates), nor may they satisfy prerequisites for those course sequences that require a “C- or better,” without special permission from the department.
Students may elect this option for at most one course in any one department. The CR/NC grade option is not available for Shared Passage Seminars or for the final course taken to satisfy the language requirement (i.e. 103 or 201).
Language selection and placements. Proficiency in a second language through the Intermediate Level (i.e., the 103 course for Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, and Japanese; the 201 course for French, German, Latin, and Spanish) is a graduation requirement at Kalamazoo College. Starting this requirement early has many benefits!
Make sure to take the required Math and/or Chemistry placement exams. If you completed the exams by June 15, scores will be postedin early July before registration. Note that the course you placed into might not be offered in fall term.
If you took AP or IB exams, you will be granted one unit of credit for each subject areain which you earned a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Exam or a score of 5 or higher on the Higher Level IB Exam. Official scores must be sent directly to the College.
If you are interested in a potential business or economics major or in taking advanced courses in these departments, Calculus (MATH-112) is required for the major and is a pre-requisite for some courses.
When Kalamazoo Valley receives an approved evaluation report, a credit evaluation will be completed within two weeks to determine which course equivalencies or electives should be awarded following the same guidelines outlined above for U.S. institutions.
A maximum of 47 credits toward an associate degree can be acquired through transfer, training or examination programs. Within those 47 transfer credits, a maximum of 31 elective credit hours will be awarded. Transfer credits will be posted to a student’s Kalamazoo Valley transcript by the Degree Auditor. Only credits will become part of the official transcript. Grades and scores from other institutions are used in the evaluation process but do not become part of the Kalamazoo Valley record and are not reflected in the student’s grade point average.
Kalamazoo Valley requires a $20 administration fee which must be paid before taking each DSST test. This can be paid at the Pay Station by cash, check, credit or debit card; or online at www.kvcc.edu/services/testing/ with a credit or debit card.
If you do not earn the minimum credit granting score, you must wait six (6) months before repeating the same exam. The test is computer-based. DSST is given on a walk-in basis at the Kalamazoo Valley Testing Center.
for courses that are graded pass/fail or credit/no credit from another institution, “pass” or “credit” will be considered by Kalamazoo Valley as equivalent to a grade of 2.0 (C)
Kalamazoo Valley Community College awards course credit from any regionally accredited institution in the United States when: a grade of 2.0 (C) or higher was earned in the course.
A course-by-course evaluation converts grades, educational experience, and levels of study into U.S. equivalents. There is a fee for this service.
Some students choose this option if they want to prevent a low grade in a class from damaging a GPA but still need to earn credit and complete the class.
This varies greatly per class. It's important to consider why you are taking a course.

Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) is a policy that allows you to take courses without receiving final grades that factor into your GPA calculations. If you are enrolled an CR/NC course:
Check on your current grade and points left possible in a class before electing to take it for CR/NC. It may be helpful to calculate your GPA and/or consult with the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships for assistance.
Typically, CR/NC may not be used for classes in your major or minor. There are also courses that require a final grade due to licensure requirements. Some programs use "default" grades for students who take classes as CR/NC when it comes to calculating GPA for admission purposes.
No Credit (NC) is earned if you receive a grade D+ through F for a course. NC does not fulfill degree requirements.
The Office of the Registrar consults with departmental faculty to determine how previously earned college coursework transfers to a K curriculum.
The College cannot guarantee that credit accepted for transfer will automatically apply toward a major or graduation.
Kalamazoo College accepts the Common Application exclusively. We do not require an application fee, and have been test-optional since 2015.
