Short answer, golf holes are measured “across the ground” using the playing route that most golfers will take. For example, on a dogleg hole, the measurement is taken from the tee box to the apex of the dogleg. Then from that apex to the center of the green.

Dogleg Left Golf Holes

On a hole that bends sharply to the left after you have teed off, you have to decide whether you are going to follow along with the fairway or try to "cut the corner" by flying over a hazard on the golf course. If the dogleg comes within the first 200 yards of the hole, you may want to go over the hazard and cut the distance.

Dogleg Right Golf Holes

Determine whether you have a shot at cutting the corner on the dogleg right hole. If you get good distance on your drives and the dogleg is less than 220 yards from the tee, you may want to go for it. For right-handed golfers, you will want to hit a fade (left to right movement) so you can get the ball on line to the green.

Fivesome

Anyone ever notice if the scorecard yardage is quite a bit different than what the holes actually play? I played a course last week that was a little over 6500 according to the scorecard but came out to a little under 6200 according to the GPS numbers. I know tee locations can differ from day to day, but a difference of 300+ yards seems odd to me.

Rusty1885

Gps measures straight line to the hole. A few holes on the course I play are almost 90* dogleg. One is a 500 yard par 5, 3 shots on par 5 usually, on the tee the gps would say 360 yard hole.

A lot of times it is just like Rev said remember a lot of older courses were measured way back when and measuring devices are different and more accurate today. I can remember when they used to measure courses with a counter wheel set to feet and do the math conversion.

If you know the course layout or have a scorecard, you can go to Google earth and check the distance. You can also check Blue Golf and see if your course is listed.

And here is where a lot of people get their 300-plus yard drives from. They'll cut a dog leg and then do the math off the score card and it makes their drives seem much farther than they actually hit

Big Stu is right here as well. Doglegs can work the other way. They can add yardage. There is a nice little country club not far from my house. Always in great shape, nice membership, course used to host an LPGA event. It has tons of dog legs including five super sharp dog legs right.
