Peace Corps - Office of Strategic Information, Research, and Planning . 1. INTRODUCTION . The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries.
In 1961, the first Peace Corps Volunteers accepted assignments to serve in six countries. Since then, more than 200,000 men and women have served in 139 countries. Peace Corps activities cover issues ranging from HIV/AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.
