Directed Independent Research (XXX 4912) is a course for students who are working closely with a faculty member on a research or creative project. It is available in most majors to document and formalize independent research activities for undergraduates. You enroll in 4912 with your research mentor.
The process is done through your academic advisors, not through MyUCF. We strongly encourage starting this process the semester beforehand (some departments and college’s deadlines for registration are earlier than the Add deadline. You will need your faculty mentor’s assistance.

In scheduling your courses, please be cognizant that the Plan of Study Policy requires that at least 27 credit hours of doctoral programs must include formal coursework and at least 24 semester hours of master’s programs must be core and elective courses exclusive of thesis and research.
Graduate Certificates provide a shortened, condensed and focused course of study for non-degree and graduate students that supplements an existing bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree. The most popular graduate certificate programs are those that lead to licensure or certification, provide needed on-the-job expertise, or are focused on a timely area of discussion in a discipline. For a quick reference guide on policies associated with certificate programs, please see Graduate Certificate Policy in the Policy Guide and Graduate Certificate Program Policies in the Graduate Catalog.
The Graduate Council Curriculum Committee reviews new graduate courses and special topic requests, as well as proposed revisions and deletions of existing courses and makes recommendations to the Vice President and Dean of the College of Graduate Studies. They also provide recommendations about all other course-related changes to existing degree programs, such as changing the hours required and adding, deleting, or modifying an option, track, or specialty area.
The University of Central Florida maintains compliance with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC) policy, Substantive Change for Accredited Institutions of the Commission on Colleges, through the appropriate and timely reporting on areas of substantive change.
Scheduling flexibility is crucial to ensure that students who need to take courses are able to match their schedules to the course offerings. There are a variety of scheduling options available now so that courses can begin before the semester, after the start of the semester, and for various periods of time.
Interdisciplinary programs that have the participation of more than one college must indicate approval of the involved colleges. The proposal is referred to the Graduate Council for evaluation and recommendation to the Vice President and Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.
Substantive changes include actions reviewed by the undergraduate and graduate curriculum committees. These include but are not limited to: significantly changing the length of a program. initiating a degree completion program. changing from clock hours to credit hours.
No. Each credit counts towards only one class. You will indicate which class you want the credit to count towards when you sign up for each study. *This decision cannot be changed* so think carefully which class you allocate credits to.
You may be enrolled in more than one class that allows class credit. As noted above, each credit you earn counts for only one course. When you sign onto the system, make sure to highlight ALL the courses that you are enrolled in that are eligible. Then, when you sign up for a particular study you will be asked to indicate which course you’d like to assign credit from that study to. Once you make this decision, it cannot be modified.
The lab is technically open until the last day of classes, although the last studies may run a week or two before hand. If you repeatedly sign up for studies and do not show up, you may be contacted by the system administrator and/or your professor, and your continued eligibility may be discussed.
A transfer student has 6 hours of AP credit and has completed two terms (twelve hours each term) at a college or university, for a total of 30 term hours of credit. The UCF review determined that all of the credit is transferable to the University and that all of the credit is applicable to the degree program selected.
College credit earned before transferring to UCF will be reviewed to determine which of the transfer credits that you have earned will apply to the degree program that you have selected. This is the only credit that will initially count towards excess hours.
Accelerated or test credit (AP, IB, AICE, CLEP, high school dual enrollment credit, etc.) is exempt from being included in your excess credit counter. This is why you may see a difference between the hours you have already earned toward your degree and the total credits reflected in your excess credit counter.
