Candidates for the Multiple Subject and Single Subject Credential have two options available for satisfying this requirement. They can either complete a Commission-approved undergraduate subject matter preparation program or they can pass the appropriate Commission-adopted subject matter examination (s) (Education Code Sections 44280 and 44310).

What other safety nets exist for the CST, and what do they entail? Safety net CSTs are only available for certain exams, including Math (004), ELA (003), and the Multi- Subject (221/222/245).

The EAS test safety net is a passing score of 500. Candidates who earn a score between 500 and 519 will automatically receive the safety net and will see a passing score for the test in TEACH.
102The passing score is the minimum number of questions that must be answered correctly. The current passing score on the CST examination is 102 of the 150 scored questions. Score reports are provided to all candidates who take the examination.
To achieve consistency in reporting, total test scores are converted to a common scale. These scaled scores range from 400 to 600, with a scaled score of 520 representing the minimum passing score. If your test status is reported as "Pass," your total scaled score is 520 or higher.
You must bring proper identification with you to the test site. Your identification must be a current, government-issued identification printed in English, in the name in which you registered, bearing your photograph and signature.

The ALST Safety Net allows candidates who take and fail the ALST to submit an attestation signed by the chief academic officer of their school of education , which attests that the candidate has demonstrated comparable literacy skills consistent with the ALST in courses completed. This Safety Net will be implemented retroactively and will apply to anyone who has failed the ALST. The attestation form is available on the Office of Teaching Initiatives website at:

Beginning in late June, candidates who previously failed the EAS, but scored at or above the Safety Net passing score, will be notified that they have now passed the assessment.
However, neither Pearson nor NYSED can issue a refund for a test that a candidate has already taken.
