Many instructors have some existing course materials, such as handouts, worksheets, syllabus, lecture slides, assignments, readings, documents. Importing course materials into your Canvas course shell is the logical first step.
You can import existing courses directly into your Canvas courses using the course import tool. This will allow you to copy all material (assignments, discussions, etc.) or copy selected specific material from one course into another. Canvas can even adjust assignment due dates for a new term.
The Pages tool enables you to create custom web pages within your Canvas course. Pages can be used as a static information page or as a wiki tool. A page can include text, video, and links. You can use pages to for your instructor bio, course policies, reading lists, lessons, and/or list of resources.
Modules are essentially one-level folders that provide course structure by chunking content. Modules serve as one-stop shops for content & assignments, since they can contain files, links, assessments, pages, and media.
Students won't be able to access files, assignments, pages, modules, etc., unless you publish those items. So don't forget to publish all your content items (eg, files and assignments). Publish your modules. And, last but not least, publish your course.
For both you and your students, the course navigation menu is your means of finding your way around your Canvas course site. However, the menu may not look the same for you and your students. When you view the course navigation menu of a site in which you are an instructor, you will note that some links are black, while others are light gray.
1. To begin adjusting your course navigation menu, click on Settings in the course navigation menu, and choose the Navigation tab at the top.
Once you have customized your course navigation menu to your liking, you can use Canvas’ Student View tool to look at your course site through the eyes of a student. This is an excellent way to make sure that your students will have access to the correct items in the course navigation menu.
