How does Course Reserves work. Course Reserves allows your library to create a subset of high use items in the library with a much shorter loan period so that patrons taking a particular class have easier access to these materials. If your library chooses, Course Reserves can be configured to track the different circulation patterns for items on and off reserve (since low use items typically become high use when on reserve).
Course Reserves involves creating course records (one record per course) that can be accessed in a number of ways. Like the bibliographic record, the course record is a stand-alone record, meaning that it does not have to be linked to any other record. Course records can have links to other records, such as bibliographic and item records. These links can be made active or …

· Aug 18, 2021. Course reserves are materials that your instructor and/or the Libraries have put together to help support you. Course Reserves is a vital student resource that sets aside course materials at the library and allows students to borrow the material for free. This allows students, especially those who may be economically disadvantaged, broad access to the materials they need to be successful in their courses.
Electronic course reserve (ECR) service allows students to access course reserve materials electronically from anywhere via the library catalog. Photocopies are scanned as PDF documents and made available via the library online catalog.
Access to the Electronic Reserves is available via the Find e-reserves & Recommended books link on the Library home page. This will take you to the Course Code Search screen.
To see if a book is reserved you can search under course code or lecturer. For more information regarding Course Reserves go to https://library.nwu.ac.za/course-reserves.
Alma’s course reserve functionality is fully integrated and uses the same user and bibliographic databases as the rest of the system. Additionally, Alma provides searching of both bibliographic records and course reserve information in a single interface for library staff, and through a common discovery interface, such as Primo, for end users.
Courses may be imported into Alma in batch by a course loader that accepts a file of courses. The loader may be used to update certain elements of the course information such as the number of participants. The loader may also be used to create new courses based on older descriptions.
Dedicated workflows facilitate the temporary change of item information for physical copies that have been moved to a reserved area. For example changing their temporary location or the terms of use by which they are circulated, and setting the date on which the item is expected to be moved back to its permanent location.
Courses contain start and end dates for the course. The course and the reading lists that are part of the course will be activated and deactivated automatically based on the course dates. They can also be activated or deactivated manually.
Alma provides the ability to easily create and delete temporary records for reserve purposes. To add a brief record to a reading list, the staff operator simply needs to choose the option to “Add Brief” in the citations tab of the reserves list.
Reading lists can be searched and sets created using the standard Alma repository search functions.
Patrons access Course Reserves material through Primo. Many libraries include Course Reserves as a separate scope in the discovery layer:
