Because vermiculite is very light and easy to handle, it easily mixes with soil, peat, composted pine bark and other composted organic materials, fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. These mixes help retain air, plant food, and moisture, and releases them as needed by the plant. Because vermiculite is very light and easy to handle, it easily mixes with soil, peat, composted pine bark and other composted organic materials, fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
Like perlite, these different sizes comprise the different grades of vermiculite: large, medium, fine, superfine and micron. The most commonly used sizes are 0–2, 2–4, and 4–8 mm in diameter. The particles are then superheated in a process called exfoliation to create elongated, accordion-like particles.
Vermiculite allows growers to create a grow media that promotes healthy, profitable crops. Coarse vermiculite improves soil's ability to nourish plants by improving its water retention and aeration. Vermiculite is a natural mica mineral that expands under extreme heat. Loosens soil, allowing roots to spread and grow.
Grade 3-AGrade 3-A Coarse Vermiculite is the second largest grain size available, provides good cushioning properties and comes in a 1.75-cubic-ft.
Vermiculite is made from compressed dry flakes of a silicate material which is absorptive and spongy. The color of vermiculite is a golden brown to a dark brown and is a sometimes difficult to tell from the potting soil it's mixed with.
This expanded vermiculite (granular ) loose fill aggregate is a coarse grade size material. Grade 3 vermiculite is suitable for chemical shipping and protects bottled liquid. The absence of fines makes it ideal for use with smaller packaging, while also creating less dust.
Crude vermiculite is vermiculite that has not been heated or expanded and is divided into five primary grades based upon particle size. The grades are large, medium, fine, superfine and micron.
Medium grade vermiculite can be used directly for root cuttings. Just water thoroughly and insert the cutting up to the node. Use vermiculite alone or mixed with soil or peat for seed germination. This will allow seeds to germinate more rapidly.
Vermiculite comes in different grades from micro to coarse, and it depends what you want to do with it in your garden. If you want to mix it with, say perlite for large plants in Hydro, a grade of vermiculite where the grains are as big as typical perlite (3,4,5mm etc.) would probably be best.
1-3mm Grade: Ideal for seed covering & mixing with composts. For aeration & water retention in seed growing mediums – mix 4 parts seed compost to 1 part vermiculite. For small surface sown seeds, lightly cover the sown seed with vermiculite rather than the growing medium.
Identifying Insulation That is Made From Vermiculite Vermiculite insulation is a pebble-like, pour-in product and is usually gray-brown or silver-gold in color.
The biggest difference between vermiculite and perlite is moisture retention. When making the perlite vs. vermiculite decision, keep in mind that differences between the two include the fact that vermiculite contains nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium, which perlite doesn't have.
Due to their different moisture retention qualities, vermiculite is better suited to moisture-loving plants such as ferns that enjoy consistent moisture, while perlite would be more suitable for succulents and other plants that prefer a drier growing medium.
