Introduction

The cell potential, E c e l l, is the measure of the potential difference between two half cells in an electrochemical cell. The potential difference is caused by the ability of electrons to flow from one half cell to the other. Electrons are able to move between electrodes because the chemical reaction is a redox reaction.

Electrochemical Cell

An electrochemical cell is comprised of two half cells. In one half cell, the oxidation of a metal electrode occurs, and in the other half cell, the reduction of metal ions in solution occurs. The half cell essentially consists of a metal electrode of a certain metal submerged in an aqueous solution of the same metal ions.

How does this relate to the cell potential?

For electrons to be transferred from the anode to the cathode, there must be some sort of energy potential that makes this phenomenon favorable. The potential energy that drives the redox reactions involved in electrochemical cells is the potential for the anode to become oxidized and the potential for the cathode to become reduced.

Cell Diagram

The image above is called the cell diagram. The cell diagram is a representation of the overall reaction in the electrochemical cell. The chemicals involved are what are actually reacting during the reduction and oxidation reactions. (The spectator ions are left out).

Standard Cell Potential

The standard cell potential ( E c e l l o) is the difference of the two electrodes, which forms the voltage of that cell. To find the difference of the two half cells, the following equation is used:

Important Standard Electrode (Reduction) Potentials

The table below is a list of important standard electrode potentials in the reduction state. To determine oxidation electrodes, the reduction equation can simply be flipped and its potential changed from positive to negative (and vice versa).

Problems

For this redox reaction (2) S n ( s) + P b 2 + ( a q) → S n 2 + ( a q) + P b ( s) write out the oxidation and reduction half reactions. Create a cell diagram to match your equations.

What is the only criterion for distinguishing right from wrong?

Premise 1: The only criterion for distinguishing right from wrong is the moral system of the society in which the act occurs. Premise 2 (subconclusion): The only ethical standard for judging an action is the moral system of the society in which the act occurs.

When the universe has crushed him, will man still be nobler than that which kills him?

Conclusion: When the universe has crushed him man will still be nobler than that which kills him.2. Premise 1: Rights are either God-given or evolve out of the democratic process. Premise 2: Most rights are based on the ability of people to agree on a social contract, the ability to make and keep agreements.

What is the main sequence of stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram?

The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram the various stages of stellar evolution. By far the most prominent feature is the main sequence (grey), which runs from the upper left (hot, luminous stars) to the bottom right (cool, faint stars) of the diagram.

What is the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram?

Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram. The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram ( HR diagram) is one of the most important tools in the study of stellar evolution. Developed independently in the early 1900s by Ejnar Hertzsprung and Henry Norris Russell, it plots the temperature of stars against their luminosity (the theoretical HR diagram), ...

What does Katniss's flashback show?

Through flashback, Katniss reveals how she grew up as a survivor after her father's death and her mother's descent into depression. Not only does this flashback illustrate Katniss' strength and will to survive, but it also highlights more of the injustices imposed upon the different districts by the people in the Capitol.

What hand do you hold out to Katniss?

As a tribute to Katniss, the audience members hold their three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips and then hold them out to Katniss, a District 12 gesture that shows admiration, thanks, and goodbye to someone they love.
