Providing body composition measures to monitor health risk - using only a phone!

The Body Volume Index (BVI) is a revolutionary measurement system using new 3D body shape technology as a modern-day way to measure obesity and predict health risk.

OUR SOLUTIONS

The BVI SDK allows you to integrate our technology to monitor, track and measure your client’s visceral fat, total body fat%, waist to hip ratio and risk.

Looking to improve your health risk assessment ?

With real-time access to body composition data, monitoring end-user health has never been easier than with BVI Risk App and Portal. If you are looking to improve your health risk assessment process, find out more about our innovative digital solution.

What is BVI in health?

Body Volume Index (BVI): Time to Replace Body Mass Index (BMI)? Body Mass Index (BMI) is used Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to define weight and as a numerical authority to determine risk of morbidity and mortality. In a systematic review by Romero-Corral and colleagues, overweight (BMI 25-29.9) had a lower risk of total and cardio-vascular mortality and obesity (BMI 30-35) had no increase risk for total or cardio-vascular mortality compared with normal BMI suggesting BMI lacked a discriminatory power for cardio-vascular and total mortality. Waist circumference (WC) and waist-hip ratio (WHR), surrogates for abdominal adiposity, are better predictors of myocardial infarction. Body Volume Index (BVI) is a totally new, reproducible and novel concept allowing estimation of an individual’s body part volumes using a 3D body scanner (total body and 8 body segment volumes). Thus, obesity based on individual body shape can be assessed. We evaluated the relationship between BMI, WC, body composition and BVI in 53 obese/overweight (77% female) volunteers. Data included age, gender, BMI,WC, body composition (Tanita), random plasma glucose and 3D body scans. BVI, WC and body segment volumes were calculated. BVI was defined as total body volume/height 2 (L/m 2 ).

Is BVI a valid method?

BVI is a valid new method in assessing overweight/obesity. BVI is automated, more reproducible and less operator-dependant than BMI and WC. Further studies to obtain normative BVI data and correlation with obesity-related complications are required.

What is the BVI system?

The BVI system is an alternative to BMI and will provide benefits to healthcare in the following areas:- . 1. As an obesity assessment tool, BVI will allow for quick, safe and accurate assessment of body weight, body composition, fat distribution and anthropometric measurement of an individual.

What is the BMI used for?

This is particularly true for obesity where manual measurements of waist circumference, waist to hip ratio and Body Mass Index (BMI) are currently used for assessment and diagnosis.

When was the Body Benchmark Study created?

A major new study, The Body Benchmark Study was launched in March 2007 to create the Body Volume Index (BVI); the world’s first computer based anthropometric measurement for healthcare using 3D scanners that allows assessment of obesity based on body volume, body composition and body shape.

When was the BVI created?

The idea for BVI was originally conceived in January 2000, but development was delayed until we had completed our commitments to M&S on their Bra Survey and the seventeen retailers on Size UK who commissioned us to help on that project in early 2001.
