EMS Skills Days. R esidents participate or teach at EMS skills day each July. This is held at the York County Fire School during intern orientation month. Residents get hands on training in simulated field conditions such as back of the ambulance procedures, spinal immobilization, disaster triage and decontamination, and hands on vehicle extrication.

It takes approximately 120 hours of supervised training to become an EMT. This typically takes candidates between six months and one year to complete. Your training may take longer to complete if you decide to pursue an advanced EMT role that requires additional certifications.
While some EMTs work regular eight-hour shifts five days a week, others may choose to work four 10-hour shifts instead. EMTs may also work weekends, nights or holidays as needed. Many EMTs are on call 24/7 in case they need to respond to an emergency. Because of this, EMTs may work overtime to make sure their patients receive the care they need.
Becoming an AEMT requires an additional 350 hours of supervised training.

Our EMT program is in an academy format conducted over 17 consecutive days. Students will stay at the Pelham Training facility for the duration of this course.
An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the initial emergency responder level able to treat and transport patients. Our EMT Academy prepares the EMT student to provide pre-hospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries.
Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMT’s, anatomy and physiology, airway management, assessment of the patient, medical emergencies, trauma, special considerations, as well as a variety of scenario based training in preparation for working in the pre-hospital setting, and providing safe and efficient patient transportation.
Please understand that Pelham Training cannot shuttle students around the area for any reason and we may not be able to send more than one student to a site. Please be aware that clinical attendance is required for successful completion of the course.
All coursework is instructor led and completed while you are here with us. Our training schedule provides much more time out of the classroom and working with scenarios, skills demonstration, and problem-based exercises than most EMT classes.
EMT is an entry-level position in the emergency medical services field. In 3-4 months, you can learn the skills you will need to work as part of a medical response team. EMTs provide basic emergency medical care and transportation to patients who access the EMS system. Medics make a difference, every day.

Class times will be from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Clinical hours will vary according to location (hours can vary from 5:00 a.m. -1:30 p.m. and 7:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.). Please note: Students must provide their own transportation to and from clinical sites. WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital.
Due to the extensive individual training received at our clinical sites, we will select between 4 and 8 students for each class. This is dependent on the availability of staff to provide one to one clinical training at each location.

EMT classes start every spring and fall. Paramedic programs begin approximately every 15 months. As one program completes, preparations to start the next class begins. Please contact us for more specific class dates.
The current starting pay for a paramedic is $62,900 with an average compensation of $68,900, depending on location.

The hybrid program is a 12-month program that breaks down to 70% in-person interaction and 30% online with instructor guidance. The face to face interaction consists of one, eight-hour traditional classroom setting designated for skills teaching and testing during the week, ambulance ride time and clinicals. The online segment consists of interactive lectures, writing papers, completing individual or group projects, quizzes and exams.
The A&P class is one semester.
Yes, you must be a Nationally Registered EMT in the State of Louisiana to enroll in the paramedic program. You must complete A&P before enrolling in the paramedic program. SLCC does offer A&P for paramedic students. We also accept transfer A&P credits (must be 4 hours) from other regionally accredited colleges and universities.
Paramedic students are eligible for FAFSA and other financial aid. All EMT students are encouraged to apply for financial assistance through Workforce Innovation and Opportunity (WIOA) funding and thorough SLCC EMT student scholarships.
