Mar 28, 2022 · The University has a policy which allows undergraduates to repeat a course in which they earned a “D”, “F,” or “WU”. If the second grade is a “C” or better and taken at CSULB, the second grade will be used to calculate your GPA. If a student does not pass a course or fails to complete the course, there is the option to repeat it. The repeat policy allows for a student to repeat up to 28 units. Out of the 28 units, 16 units can be used for grade forgiveness (see below).
Retaking a course may raise your student's GPA (grade point average). In many schools, if a student retakes a course, the most recent grade will replace the lower grade in the student's GPA. The earlier, lower grade will remain on the transcript, but will not be included in the GPA.Mar 4, 2010
When repeating a course with a substandard grade and submitting a Course Repeat Adjustment Request, the last grade earned will count toward the grade point average and previous grade(s) will be discounted or forgiven. Only the first two substandard grades per course can be discounted via this petition.
This can only be done once per course at CSULB. If you don't earn a “C” or better on the second try, all grades will be counted. Undergraduate students may repeat 28 units of which 16 can be for grade forgiveness, per Executive Order 1037.
The first thing you need to be clear about is that retaking classes (in most cases) has a minimal effect on your GPA, because retaken classes don't replace your low grades – they average in with them. That's right: your low grade won't be dropped – the retaken class grade will be added to it and averaged.
Even if you do fail, you can retake the class and ask for help. Although it will negatively impact your GPA and could affect your financial obligations, you can bounce back. Start by asking for more help and studying differently or harder if you retake the course. Most importantly, don't give up.

Students may repeat a course where the student has received a satisfactory grade and there has been a “significant lapse of time” since completion of the class. Fullerton College has defined a “significant lapse of time” as five (5) years.
Students may repeat the same class no more than 2 additional times (total of 3 attempts) within the district (Fullerton and Cypress College). After 3 unsuccessful attempts in the same class, registration for that course is automatically blocked.
Credit/No Credit Options To enroll in a class on a CR/NC basis, the student must register for the class and then submit a request to change their grading option to CR/NC (refer to Grade Option Change Requests for instructions). Approval of the student's major advisor is required.

After one year, or at the end of the semester in which the student graduates (whichever comes first), an Incomplete will be automatically changed to an “F” (failure) or a "U" (unsatisfactory) unless the course has been previously completed and a grade change submitted by the instructor or the head of the department.
A maximum of 16 units can be applied for Grade Forgiveness. Courses must be taken at CSULB. When a passing grade is earned on the second attempt, the transcripts will reflect both courses, but only the passing grade will be calculated in the GPA.
Grades Averaged is used when the maximum 16 units have already been used for Grade Forgiveness. If the student needs to take a course for a third time, and the appeal is granted, all three of the grades will be averaged.
In the Breaks section, click the “+ Add Break” button. Enter a name for your break, select start/end times and days and click the “Save Break” button. Generate. You can generate and view all possible class schedule combinations based on the selected courses and requested break times.
Dropping a Class. From the Drop subtab, you can drop a class, whether you are on the waitlist or officially enrolled in the class. Simply check the box next to the class (es) you wish to drop. After Self-Service registration has ended, drops must be submitted in-person with the appropriate approvals.
Class Schedule Planner provides a variety of potential class schedules based on your class preferences and other time conflicts, such as work, sport, or family commitments. The Class Schedule Planner is only a tool to aid with the creation of your schedule and DOES NOT enroll you into classes.
Students not attending a class in which they are enrolled must drop or withdraw from the class; failure to do so will result in a failing grade on the student’s record (F or WU). Withdrawing occurs when you remove yourself from classes AFTER self-service registration ends for the term or session. Before withdrawing, you should consider the consequences of such an action and consult with your academic advisor since it will generally impact your progress towards your degree, future course enrollment and financial aid eligibility.
Instructors may provide mid-term progress reports to students at the midpoint of the term. These grades do not appear on students' transcripts or affect their GPAs. It can be beneficial for students to review their progress and develop plans to maintain or improve their performance in class.

Waitlisted classes will count towards your maximum number of units allowed for registration, but you will only be charged for fees based on your number of units “enrolled". Additional charges, if any, will be assessed if you are successfully enrolled from the waitlist.
No more than 24 units total taken during any term while in non-matriculated status may be used to fulfill any undergraduate degree requirements. All students who have not been formally admitted to CSULB and who take courses here are non-matriculated students. Courses taken by incoming freshmen during the summer prior to their first fall are considered non-matriculated units. Students looking to transfer units to a graduate program may transfer up to 30% of the units required for their degree program (for example, 9 transfer units for a 30-unit program).
Advising is an opportunity for students to connect to their college or department advisor, faculty and staff to discuss future educational plans. Through this connection, students will be able to discuss future educational goals, review program options, and receive advice on course selection.
The California Education Code (section 89320 ) requires “each state university, in administering any test or examination, to permit any student who is eligible to undergo the test or examination to do so, without penalty, at a time when that activity would not violate the student’s religious creed.
In consideration of the Veterans Affairs Services requirement to equitably certify student veteran benefits in accordance with Title 38 of the United States Code, a post-baccalaureate student veteran in a credit-limited program is considered full-time as long as he or she is enrolled in those courses that are required by the educational program being pursued. Full-time status is awarded to all post-baccalaureate and graduate students who have less than nine (9) units when no other units are offered in their program. Some classes use academic technology to replace part or all of the face-to-face class meetings. In a hybrid class, one-third to two-thirds of the student/faculty and student/student contact time uses academic technology to structure remote activities. The remaining communication is face-to-face, similar to traditional classes. A Local Online Class is a course offering in which the majority of the instruction occurs when the student and instructor are not in the same place, but it may require up to two hours of face-to-face meetings per unit on the California State University, Long Beach campus within the given semester. A fully online is a course offering in which communication between faculty and student occurs primarily via academic technology, but it may also include off-site meetings. 1.1 A student pursuing a baccalaureate degree or a credential program carrying 12 or more units during the fall or spring semester is classified as a full-time student. If you no longer plan to participate in a class that you are enrolled in, you must drop or withdraw from the class. The process to drop or withdraw will vary depending on when you decide to do so:
There is no guarantee you will be moved off the waitlist and enrolled into the class. Once the process to move students from the waitlist has run for the final time and classes have begun, instructors are not required to add students who were waitlisted for the class. Moving Off the Waitlist.
If for any reason, a course cannot be delivered online, then the course may be cancelled.
All scheduled class sections have waitlists. The size of the waitlist is based on size of the class. You can place yourself on the waitlist provided the list is not already full. If a seat becomes available, the student highest on the waitlist will get the seat (subject to the limitations below).
