So Virginia became a microcosm of England: a small class of wealthy landowners sitting atop a mass of servants.

History. The predominant culture of the South has its origins with the settlement of the region by British colonists. In the 17th century, most were of English origins, but in the 18th century, large groups of Scots-Irish settled in Appalachia and the Piedmont.
The English were the first Europeans to settle the Southern colonies. In 1606 an expedition of colonists sailed from England to the New World. The next year they established Jamestown Colony in what is now the state of Virginia. It was the first permanent English settlement in America.
The colonists inslaved more Native Americans than anyone else. The Native Americans were taken as slaves and had to do work around the owners home and had to grow rice and other cash crops. All of these show the realtionship between the Native Americans.
Up until the 1970s, these first Americans had a name: the Clovis peoples. They get their name from an ancient settlement discovered near Clovis, New Mexico, dated to over 11,000 years ago. And DNA suggests they are the direct ancestors of nearly 80 percent of all indigenous people in the Americas.
