Information Strategy first and foremost should be based on the current status of an organisation along with the future vision of the organisation. It is more than just tools and technology. It is also about people and the organisation.
Key considerations in an Information Strategy 1 Carefully craft a vision that portrays information as a valuable asset for the organisation. 2 Identify critical success factors (CSFs) with focus on specific business outcomes. 3 Key performance indicators (KPIs) should leverage business outcomes e.g. reduce inventory holding by 5%. 4 Business outcomes should be scoped to clarify specific results. 5 Provide a link to a future state of the organisation with IS goals and objectives. 6 Outline information current states and identify specific gaps to be addressed e.g. no clear ownership for supplier data 7 Roles and responsibilities along with rules of engagement with business should be clear e.g. what is the process to incorporate new application development, new technology or information changes? 8 Link success to business metrics for continued business input e.g. achieving inventory reduction goal with new application or on time order fulfilment. 9 Involve stakeholders, business leadership in proposed information strategy setting to ensure alignment and commitment with business strategy and organisational strategy. 10 Information strategy need to be reviewed regularly to ensure it continues to evolve to business needs, business environment changes or new technologies 11 The Information Strategy should be clear, concise and audience appropriate i.e. executive leadership do not require a detailed report (Lapkin, 2011).
The corporate level strategy creates the action plan to achieve the organisational objective. It cascades down through functional levels of finance, production, IS etc. Therefore in theory strategy should align.
