Students concentrate on balancing and matching available lighting with electronic flash and continuous lighting tools. Emphasis is on the technical, professional and logistical skills required of a photographer working on location assignments and on using creative approaches to lighting and image design.

Students in the filmmaking concentration will work on a number of short works in film and new media he or she has written, produced, directed, lensed and edited, and each has ample opportunity to learn a range of professional crew positions. The curriculum emphasis is on basic to advanced independent and artisanal approaches to filmmaking in the areas of fiction, documentary and experimental media.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Film with a concentration in photography will expose you to working photographers, filmmakers and industry trends through seminars, guest lectures, field trips and workshops. Your courses will include both theoretical study and hands-on experience in the fields of fine art, studio and location photography.
The concentration in photography will give you technical and conceptual skills to begin a career as a professional artist or a commercial photographer. Coursework emphasis is on individual artistic expression and inquiry, and the development of a professional, practice-based toolkit of knowledge.

The Solutions Journalism: Reporting during COVID-19 and Beyond course is ideal for current VCU undergraduate and graduate students in the Robertson School, VCU and VCU Health employees working in a communication role, and particularly for professional journalists or anyone reporting on responses to social problems, including reporters, producers, editors, freelancers, and related professionals. Students and employees taking the course for credit will complete 45 contact hours; those taking the course as noncredit will complete 25 contact hours. While the online course is asynchronous and recordings of lectures will be available, students may tune in to view live broadcasts. The course includes guest speakers and online discussions, and students report and write their own solution-based news story.
