Creating Test Questions

Avoid copy/pasting directly from Word as Microsoft embeds certain proprietary code that can interfere with your test when deployed. Instead, save your Word document as a Plain Text document and then copy/paste.

Setting Test Options

Avoid setting an assessment to open in a new window as this tends to introduce user navigation errors and browser setup issues.

Creating Large Tests

Break up large tests into multiple smaller tests. If you want to give a 2-hour test, break it up into four smaller 30-minute tests. Allow for 1-2 minutes per question depending on the amount of reading and complexity of the question. Break Essay questions into their own tests.

Extending Test Time

Extended time on exams is one of the most common accommodations across disability groups. The typical recommendations are time and one half or double time, but students working with a reader or scribe may require more than double time. We do not recommend unlimited time unless this option is available to all students.

A. Ensure students have access (are enrolled) on the Moodle course

Important: Students must be enrolled in the relevant Moodle course to be able to access and submit their assessments.

B. Communicate to your students the requirements of their assessment

Important: It is very important that you clearly communicate with your students the requirements of each of their assessments.

C. Quiz settings (for time limited assessment to be taken at any time within a 24-hour period)

As of Fall 2014, Blackboard courses are created for all current class sections. Instructors need submit course requests for two services only:

How to check your assessment?

It is strongly recommended that you check your assessment in at least one of two ways: Take the assessment yourself, or print a hard copy for review. For very important assessments, do both!

What should a student name their assessment?

You should name your assessment so that it (1) identifies the course it belongs to, (2) the semester, and (3) and the sequence of the assessment. So follow the standard of:

What is a pre assessment notice?

A Pre-Assessment "notice" pops up as soon as a student has logged into an assessment but before he/she sees any questions. Notices may remind students of special instructions, requirements, and so on that pertain to your assessment. You may include multiple notices on your assessment.

When to use group items?

Grouped items are used when you have multiple questions pertaining to the same content. For example, you may present a clinical case and ask students to answer several items about that case.

Is it a good practice to keep students reasonably informed about your impending assessment of them?

Do you need a password for a secure assessment?

By checking the "Secure" box, you are requiring a password to be provided before a student can begin your assessment. Other features may be enabled or disabled, depending upon your choice of using a Secure assessment. A non-secure assessment may be indicated if it is very low-stakes, you have no concerns about item security, and/or you want students to complete the assessment outside of class time.

Can you enable or disable examsoft?

There are features you may enable or disable on your assessment, as you see fit. While in ExamSoft, you can hover your mouse over each option for a more detailed explanation.
